About the Author
Tom Coffeen is currently an IPv6 evangelist at Infoblox, Inc where he focuses on helping customers deploy IPv6 and enhancing IPv6 product strategy. Prior to Infoblox, Tom led the successful deployment of IPv6 at a global service provider. He brings seventeen years of network engineering and architecture experience to his current role. Tom lives in San Francisco with his partner, Eva, and their elderly cattle dog, Wojciehowicz.

IPv6 industry expert Tom Coffeen writes a timely, useful and practical IPv6 address planning book

Tom has written an excellent title that was sorely needed in the IPv6 lexicon of books. Tom has broken up the book into 10 chapters that cover the material needed by enterprise network architects (and others) to make reasonable decisions on well formed IPv6 addressing plans. The chapters are:

2. What You Need to Know About IPv6 Addressing
3. Planning Your IPv6 Deployment
4. IPv6 Subnetting
5. IPv6 Address Planning Concepts
6. Getting IPv6 Addresses
7. Creating an IPv6 Address Plan

9. Managing Growth and Change
10. Keeping Your IPv6 Addresses Reachable
Tom has years of experience and he shares it to highlight some of the key differences around IPv4 verses IPv6 address planning. He also drives home practical decisions that have to be made in an address plan (IPv4 or IPv6). He has helped many companies make critical decisions around how their IPv6 address plans will work and now you get the benefit of reading his thoughts and ideas. He also provides planning worksheets for those that need some initial help getting started (and who doesn't with IPv6?) Highly recommended for Network Engineers and Architects looking to implement IPv6 on any scale.

Tom Coffeen does a great job of demystifying the IPv6 protocol, more importantly he explains the processes involved regarding obtaining network allocations from ARIN and other registreis for small to large enterprise organizations. Practical and industry best practice subnetting is explained along with complex subnetting for the "not so nervous". Highly recommended for any network engineer or architect looking towards implementing IPv6 on any scale. The book doesn't delve very deep into the mechanics of protocol 41, but is very much about network design, implementation and production management.

Original. Easy to read. Paradigm changin.

I have not finished this book yet.
But, the author successfully show and explains
- how big the IPv6 address space (vs IPv4)
- why the current IPv4 address subnetting is completely irrelevant,
- why we should go back to the classful IPv4 era concept with IPv6 address.
And, I am sold to the author.
I like this book because it has very original contents.
