A great vocabulary book!
By J. Thornton
I purchased this book to use in an intermediate ESL reading/writing class. It contains tons of exercises on the collection of academic words called the Academic Word List. I highly recommend it. This list was put together from the analysis of a corpus of articles from a range of academic topics, and it identifies words that are used in academic English across the board. My students are most interested in these words because they appear frequently in the Reading and Listening passages of the TOEFL IBT and in textbooks they will be reading after they pass the TOEFL.

A good way to teach the AWL
By Frau
I have used Focus on Vocabulary to teach the Academic Word List to advanced ESOL students for several years and found it a wonderful tool for a non-credit Adult Literacy class. The chapters are self-contained, so we just cycle around whenever we get to the end and start again at the beginning. Students can enter at any point and not feel they've missed anything, and it's doable in one academic year if you meet more than once a week. I'm shocked to learn that it's no longer in print; I prefer this one-volume version to the many several-volume alternatives publishers have come out with more recently.

One of my class' favorite read alouds.
By Janice M. Hidey
I read this book to my class every year and it is their favorite, over such greats as James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Students love to try to figure it out and I enjoy hearing their ideas. I teach third grade and for the next years they are finishing up the series. I read the first one as a read aloud and couldn't wait to finish the series on my own. John Bibee has a great imagination and knows how to use cliffhangers. I highly recommend this for families to read aloud. It will work well with third grade and up including middle schoolers. It may be too scarey for younger children. The discussions will be wonderful. It has a strong message and is a wonderful fantasy.

Superb! A great book for the adult and child.
By A Customer
Bibee's "Magic Bicycle" goes beyond children's reading. Skillfully revealed are numerous Biblical truths that even an adult can understand. Wrapped in an intrigueing, yet simple plot are feelings we have all felt, and situations we have all experienced. Both children and grown-ups will love it.

John Bibee Does It Again!
By A Customer
This second book of the "Spirit Flyer Series" isoutstanding. It is easy to read, has an exciting plot that applies towhat kids deal with today, and the spiritual truths are profound. We read these aloud to our children and they could hardly wait to see what was going to happen in each new chapter. They likes them so much that they read the books again for themselves. We parents enjoyed them just as much. END

Okay but Pricey!
By Amazon Customer
I bought this to help shed some holiday weight. The 10-day smoothie cleanse sounded like a great way to do it. My husband was eager to try it too.
Let me say right off-- I am NOT a dietician or any other health professional. I have, however, educated my self on healthy eating and clean living. First the Positives: The book is beautiful-- full color pictures of all the recipes. For the most part the smoothies and meals are delicious. There are a few that I didn't care for (anything with tomatoes-- maybe if they were in season, I would like them better) Some are dessert-like- and SUPER YUMMY - Strawberry Shortcake, Apple Pie, Blueberry-Mint. Others are VERY Green-- but still good.
I lost about 7lbs in 10 days! I will be curious as to how much of that comes back now that I am eating more solid food.
What I didn't like so much:
Because I work full time, I made all 3 smoothies in the morning and took them to work. Either the Fiber or the protein powder makes them thicken over time and they are hard to re-mix. Once I brought my immersion blender to the office- that helped a lot. They are definitely better made and eaten fresh. (but, a girl's gotta work, right?)
The Cost-- this diet is EXPENSIVE... It cost me approx. $20/per person per day for the 10 days. And several costly ingredients were used very little (Coconut manna- Used @2TBLS from a $10 20oz jar). 2 of the most costly items were the Protein and fiber power. He recommends Egg protein, I spent $80 (I did NOT buy Rocco's powder) each recipe calls for 1 scoop. I used 1 scoop for 2 smoothies due to the cost. I could only find the fiber at the health food store. The $20 bag barely lasted 6 days (and again, I used the recipe amount for 1 smoothie for 2 smoothies)
The shopping lists are tricky.. The ingredients you will need for the smoothies are for 1 person, but the ingredients you need for the meals are for 4 people. So if you are going to do this diet for 2 people, you need to double the smoothie ingredients and halve the meal ingredients.
The no coffee was tough, but I eventually got used to drinking the water to wake myself up and Aleve helped with the caffeine withdrawal headaches!
After the first few days I was not super hungry, but my husband was ALWAYS hungry. Unless I am missing something, the calorie count is about 850-950 per day... He says somewhere in the book to exercise an hour a day... I did not have enough gas in my tank to do more than @30 min at the gym.
I looked at the first day of the 20 day plan which follows the 10 day cleanse. The total calorie count for that first day is under 700 calories! So unless he is figuring his calories in some weird way (which he does not explain, at least I couldn't find an explanation) that is not enough calories for an adult, in my opinion.
So for me, Following the cleanse, I will definitely use this as a recipe book rather than a diet book. And I will try and include as many of his "negative calorie" foods as possible... good thing I like all of them!

Life Changing
By LOUIS W. DAMICO
Brilliant! After losing 70 pounds on Rocco's Pound A Day diet, I anxiously awaited the release of the new book. Well, it did not disappoint. My biggest fear after losing 70 pounds was handling the nervous and boredom eating habits I have developed over the years. Rocco introduces the reader to delicious and healthy foods to eat when snacking. I wonder why it has taken so long for a chef to enter the world of nutrition, diet and overall healthy eating. Everything Rocco DiSpirito presents is not only healthy, but delicious. Thank you Rocco for turning my life around! My blood pressure is now normal, I have more energy and feel that I am more focused. The new book, The Negative Calorie Diet, is actually easier to read and follow than the Pound A Day Diet book.

In love 10/10 !!!!!
By KJ Campbell
I love everything about this book! The pictures are beautiful, the recipes are soooooo delicious, and there's no calorie counting. Make sure you actually read chapters 1-3 because he explains what he means by "negative calorie" foods and also educates you on GMOs, the term "organic" among many other eye opening pieces of info and tips to be successful. I've made 3 of the smoothies already and all ingredients were easy to find at my local grocery store. Can't wait to try everything in this book...I feel like this is something I can stick to long term.

In rhythmic verse, My Bonus Mom!, shows children of divorced families that a positive attitude can lead to a happy outcome and springs open their hearts and minds to accept their own bonus moms. It captures the mixed emotions that surge through young children as they deal with divorce and adjust to remarriage. The children work through their feelings of dismay, fear and anger, and grow to love dad's new wife, whom they come to think of as their bonus mom. Twice the attention, twice the love, twice the fun and twice as many birthday presents! What's not to love?

Review
Tami has thoughtfully and directly dealt with a topic generally associated with negative stereotypes in our society. While her words should be recommended reading to children involved in stepfamily situations, they are of equal importance to the adults involved as well. This book shows a combined family is not about making a choice of one or the other, rather it is an opportunity filled with endless positive possibilities. The best interests of the children is a frequent phrase in the world of divorce and stepfamilies. Tami successfully provides a road map with potential positive long-term effects for a child and family. ----Tim Mead, V.P. LA Angels of Anaheim

This book beautifully captures the step-parent and how he/she can be a wonderful added gift to a family. It is a great way to dispel the evil stepmother label that has been drilled into our society by old fairy tales. Happily ever after and Step Parents CAN go hand in hand. ----Bill and Gail Engvall, Comedian, Televison Star of The Bill Engvall

This is an excellent way to show children, through the eyes of the author, Tami s, experience, that they can have a great relationship with a new stepmother, without being disloyal to Mom, and that divorces are not the fault of the children. --Tom Horne, Arizona State Attorney General

About the Author
An Arizona girl whose roots grow deep in the state her grandmother graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1935 Tami Butcher has seen the Valley grow into the metropolis it is today. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in business communications and later earned a teaching degree from Grand Canyon University. It was while teaching seventh-graders at Phoenix Prep Academy, that she made it her goal to write a children's book. But first, she married the love of her life, Mike, and started a family. She currently has three children ages 6, 9 and 13. As a child, Butcher grew up with what she lovingly refers to as her bonus mom, a nurturing, caring woman many in society would refer to as a stepmother. Butcher's parents amicably divorced when she was 11, and for the sake of Butcher and her three sisters, decided to keep each other fully involved in their children's lives despite the divorce. Eventually both her parents remarried, but they continued to share birthdays, holidays and special times together with their children, as well as with their new spouses. Because of her parents' efforts, Butcher and her sisters grew up feeling blessed for having two moms and dads instead of stepparents. Reflecting on her own family dynamics, Butcher realized that if she could plant a seed in children's minds that having a stepmother or stepfather can be a bonus, then their minds and hearts might grow to accept their parents' new spouses instead of automatically thinking of them as evil as many childhood fairytales portray them. The product of that revelation was My Bonus Mom! Always a philanthropic person, Butcher dedicates her time to helping others in need. She is currently a member of the East Valley Women s League, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that raises funds for more than 13 projects for women and children in the Valley, and is slated to be president for 2011-12. Tami gives time to New Hope Church, an inner-city church located in the most impoverished ZIP code in Arizona, and she teaches Art Masterpiece to kindergarten and third-grade classes in Chandler, which lacks the funds for regular Art classes. Currently, Butcher resides in Chandler, Ariz. with her husband and three children, where she helps with the family restaurant business. Her mother and "bonus dad" own two popular restaurants in Phoenix, Rustler's Rooste Steakhouse and Aunt Chilada's. Tami and her three children love to travel to Southern California during baseball season as her husband, Mike, is the pitching coach for the LA Angels of Anaheim. He has been with the Angels for 21 years as both a player and a coach.

Not a great book for growing families where both the Mom and Dad are great parents.
By Chi_girl
I am the stepmother of 2 children ages 5 and 3. My husband and I have a strong, healthy relationship with their mother. We thought this book would help them to understand the role/title of their new step-parent, but it does so by denigrating the father ever so slightly. For example, it shows a picture of the father leaving the house with a box of his things all in a huff and a dog chasing behind him (maybe the dad isn't always the one that leaves or is angry?); on the next page it says, "On Mondays and Tuesdays Mom's dinners were good/On Thursdays and Fridays Dad made what he could" - this is the opposite in our family and, again, degrades the ability of a father. We're all very aware of the negative connotation men get in divorce and/or child custody - and there are plenty of stories to support it. But there are just as many stories of truly wonderful fathers who are every bit as good of a dad as the mommy is a mom (and stories where the mom isn't involved at all). Really wish this book would have done a better job holding both parents up on a pedestal so our children could relate. Unfortunately, the negative stereotypes softly perpetuated in the book take away from the real beauty of a growing family out of divorce.

LOVED it!!
By Katie
I bought this book for my husband to read to my future stepson, who is five. He seems to have some loyalty conflicts and he is often confused as to what my role as stepmom is. This book is best read by the child's father, or even their mother (wishful thinking on my part, I guess), since it starts out addressing deeper issues like the parents fighting, telling the kids they are divorcing, and dad moving to a new house. But then it says how every other weekend they went to dad's, they got to have two of each holiday and birthday, and it was great. It explains how they felt when dad met someone new and that their mom even liked her. When the dad married the new woman, the kids said how no one can replace mom, but the new woman is a *bonus*, and is simply another person to love them. I think it appropriately explains what a stepmom is to children between the ages 4-7. When my fiance read this book to his five year old, you could see him thinking and making connections during certain parts of the book. I am very very happy and grateful I made this purchase!!

5 year old loves this book
By MD1985
Very positive book for our 5 year old. The role of step mom is very confusing to a kindergarten. This book helped defined the roles of the dad, the stepmom and the mom without disrespecting the birth mom. This book was up beat, rhymed (what 5 year old doesn't like that), and was written in simple terms that clearly defined the positivity of a step mom/bonus mom. Part of what makes this book unique is the fact that it was written by a child of a step parent, instead of a step parent to a child. Highly recommend this book for new or soon to be step moms.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: (1) Im on my way to an engagement. (Merriam-Webster 1984: 289) (2) Im on my way to an appointment. (Merriam-Webster 1984: 290) In most of the existing languages we can find words, which sound different but have identical meanings. These words are called synonyms. The word synonym comes from Ancient Greek syn meaning 'with' and onoma meaning 'name'. But can two words really have exactly the same meaning? Fromkin et al. does not agree with this definition, he states that no two words ever have exactly the same meaning even if they are synonyms (2003:181). Therefore synonyms are words carrying nearly similar meanings and whose usage is bound to the context. This means that one has to be careful in choosing a word; it might not carry the same meaning as the writer intended. Translation often causes irritation about which of the words fits better in a specific sentence. Especially the non-native speakers have a lot of problems in deciding which of the words is more suitable to use in a certain context and they have to face the question if any one of these words is suitable in any context. But also native speaker are not always sure about the correct use of two synonymous words. Appointment and engagement are two words with a similar sense to the common mind and share many semantic properties. In the thesaurus both words are said to be synonymous and when applying the definition above, we may agree with it. But do appointment and engagement really have exactly the same meaning? In this essay I want to work out the differences and similarities of the words appointment and engagement and if they can be considered synonymous anyway. Therefore I will have a closer look at their definition in different dictionaries and a questionnaire distributed to native speakers will be analyzed. Furthermore, a comparative a
