Francesca Woodman (1958–1981) was born into an artistic family and began to develop her interest and skill in photography during her early teenage years. She produced a distinct and original body of work in under a decade. Woodman committed suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. In the years following her death, Woodman’s work has achieved widespread critical acclaim.

How many books devoted to Francesca Woodman do we need? Francesca Woodman: Works from the Sammlung Verbund closely follows the organization by periods and places employed by the 2012 Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco) exhibition catalogue, and its plate section repeats much of that book, with the addition of some pictures by the artist as a teenager. One nude-self portrait shows Woodman entwined with the roots of a tree, eerily evoking Ana Mendieta crossed with Ophelia. But a decision to print the reproductions in four-colour black and white, instead of the finer-resolution black and white of teh earlier book, leaves the images here less crisp and lacking the spooky dark glamour captured by SF MOMA'S catalogue. Because the new volume reproduces mostly posthumour prints we dont get tho see the idiosyncratic and revealing captions Woodman wrote on some of her photos, like the scrawled title appearing under the cockeyed print of the iconic 'On being and angel #1, 1977.' And since she became an angel, and has subsequently become a saint, it makes a difference whether she touched these relics. (Christopher Lyon Bookforum)

In the wake of her death, Woodman’s photographs ― haunting black-and-white images, which examine her own body and ambivalence toward it ― have received much critical acclaim. Yet a new exhibit, currently on display at Vienna’s Sammlung Verbund gallery, and corresponding book (out next month) argues against popular interpretations of Woodman’s images that foreshadow her premature demise. In an introductory essay, the critic Elisabeth Bronfen disputes Peggy Phelan’s suggestion that Woodman’s obsession with blurred renditions of her own figure are “understood as a way to rehearse her own death,” asserting instead: “By resolutely dedicating herself to the fragility of her own appearance as a photographic rendition, Woodman highlights the very inexorable inconsistency that ties the vitality of artistic work to the transience of life.” (Erica Schwiegershausen New York Magazine)

Compares Favorably with 2006 Phaidon Book in Five Ways, But Unfavorably in Nine Ways

Francesca Woodman was a photographer who committed suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. The dust jacket blurb of this book says in part "Produced in conjunction with the first major American exhibition of the artist's work in more than two decades [at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and at New York's Guggenheim Museum], this catalog is a landmark reconsideration of Woodman for the twenty-first century." I'll compare it with the 2006 book published by Phaidon that is also titled "Francesca Woodman".

Here is a list of five ways in which this book compares favorably with the Phaidon book: (1) The inside of the dust jacket has a cool reproduction of the right part of the diazotype entitled "Caryatid, New York, 1980." See Customer Image. (2) The paper is an elegant off-white color, instead of the harsh white of Phaidon. (3) The reproductions of the prints are at the original size whenever possible, as opposed to Phaidon which reproduces some photos larger and some photos smaller than the originals. See Customer Image. (4) The four essays on pages 166-213 are together better than the Phaidon book's 66-page essay "Scattered in Space and Time" by Chris Townsend which rambles considerably. For me, the most interesting essay (because it didn't overlap much with essays in other books on Woodman) was "The Geometry of Time: Some Notes on Francesca Woodman's Video" on pages 196-203. (5) I didn't do an exact count, but approximately one-third of this book's 180 photos are not found in the Phaidon book. (In fact, the dust jacket blurb says that this book has "many previously unpublished photographs," although inside the book one cannot tell which photos have or have not been published before.) Some of the not-in-Phaidon photos grab your attention, like the one on page 101 showing the back of a woman with a brooch somehow attached to her palm (which is reproduced on the back of the dust jacket), or like the one on pages 162-163 in which Woodman poses nude in front of her birth certificate.

Here is a list of nine ways in which this book compares unfavorably with the Phaidon book: (1) This book has only four mostly-small images from Woodman's early work (1972-1975, such as "Self-Portrait at Thirteen"). The Phaidon book has early work on pages 23 and 75-83. (2) The reader cannot appreciate the sequencing of the pages in the two artists' books "Portrait of a Reputation" and "Some Disordered Interior Geometries." The 2006 Phaidon book contained thumbnail images of the entire two books on pages 236-239. (3) The photos on pages 69 and 100 are clearly related to each other, having been shot against the same wall, and involving dirt on the model's body. It is unclear why they are not on the same page spread. Same goes for the photos on pages 68 and 86, and on pages 78 and 98 (both from "Several Cloudy Days"). (4) Some of the 180 thumbnail-size photos in the "Catalogue of the Exhibition" on pages 204-219 are not reproduced at a larger size elsewhere in the book. (5) Some of the 180 photos in the "Catalogue of the Exhibition" are reproduced at a larger size in the "Essays" section, but the catalogue does not specify the pages. For example, a larger version of #2 is found on page 178, #24 ("Polka Dots") on p.168, #14 on p.189, #46 ("Directing Lightning #1") on p.176, #71 on p.186, and #176 on p.177. See Customer Image. (6) The Phaidon book has some memorable photos not found in this book, for example the one in which Woodman is holding the object that looks like a fish skeleton behind her back (Phaidon p.194). (7) The Phaidon book's postcards, studies (sketches), extracts from Woodman's journal, and "To Tell The Truth" essay by Woodman's friend give interesting insights into Woodman's methods. (8) Although the bibliography contains more recent articles than the Phaidon book, it also excludes some older articles that the Phaidon book has. (9) There is no index.

Inside a Darkened Mind

Francesca Woodman (1958 - 1981) is one of those artists whose potential was never realized fully - she died, the result of suicide, in 1981 at the age of 22. But the images she created with the camera continue to haunt the viewer and this portfolio puts it all together very well. Woodman's small photographs deal with the feminine mystique, an acceptable way of describing the strange poses she created with women models - including herself. There is a flavor here of surrealism (especially in the image f a seated girl with a handing mirage of a feminine body nearby.

It is difficult to grasp the degree of creativity necessary to create some 800 images in the course of the nine years during which she embraced her art. These images are not suggestive of Dorothea Lange or Diane Arbus, but they tend to have the same sort of response from the viewer - intense reality that becomes surreal in the context in which the statement is made. Her language is definitely her own, a mixture of dark motifs, sinister atmospheres, the use of 'sets' that are well worn interiors with the accompanying used and abused accouterments, and a sense of alienation, likely not dissimilar form the fragile mind state at her demise.

The book is a well-designed catalogue with sensitive essays and the largest collection of the works of this fascinating photographer artist that has been published. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, February 12

Emily Teeter Ph.D. is a Research Associate and Coordinator of Special Exhibits at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. She has curated temporary and permanent exhibits of Egyptian art at the Oriental Institute Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The author and co-author of a wide range of popular and scholarly publications, her most recent books include Ancient Egypt: Treasures from the Collection of the Oriental Institute; Egypt and the Egyptians; and The Life of Meresamun: A Temple Singer in Ancient Egypt.

An Exceptional Work of Scholarship

Emily Teeter has made a very important contribution to the understanding of ancient Egypt and its people. "Religion and Ritual in Ancient Egypt" will be eye-opening to both the casual egyptophile and the seasoned egyptologist. The author has brought together a bewildering amount of information (I suspect she has been gathering it for many years) and presented it in a most refreshingly uncomplicated way. Her style is eminently accessible and clearly organized--if at times a bit repetitive, which only makes browsing more intelligible.
One overarching theme runs through the entire work: The incredible longevity of the ancient egyptian religion, which seems to us so bizarre and complicated in the extreme, was due to the fact that it offered real comfort and support to a largely illiterate population, allowing for non-violent resolution of daily conflicts, simple incentives to do right, and reassuring answers to the mysteries of birth and death. The innumerable strange gods with heads of birds, beetles, cows, and crocodiles were basically benevolent and helpful figures from egyptian everyday life, and perhaps no more fanciful than centaurs, many armed shivas, eleven headed bodhisattvas, voluptuous genies, or three persons in one.
Some of the black and white photographs are slightly dark, and, in this reviewer's opinion, Teeter is a bit hard on pharaoh Akhenaten and his incorporeal monotheism, but still the work is enormously valuable and deserves five stars.

Excellent overview of Egyptian religion from the point of view of the worshipper

Why did a religion that seems so bizarre to us thrive for thousands of years and have so much appeal that one of its offshoots was actually was a rival for converts with Christianity during the Roman Empire?

That is the question which Teeter explores. The book does not delve into the mythology of the gods but rather focuses on what they meant to the average man or woman on the street. Teeter portrays a religion that was accessible to everyone, brought the community together, offered deities which were approachable--if sometimes unpredictable and even dangerous. The Egyptian religion upheld a strong moral code and offered the promise of eternal life to those who lived a good and pious life on earth.

The author's style is very readable and painless. I recommend it for readers interested in the inner life of the Egyptians and in comparitive religion in general.

An Excellent Book

Emily Teeter's fairly short book packs a lot of information. She talks not only about how the priesthood might have expressed their piety toward the gods, but also about how the common person did as well. For example, many temples had chapels of the "hearing ear", where the average person could go into a wooden booth or behind a curtain to pray to the image of a god there.

Teeter also mentions festivals and how they might have been celebrated. This particular chapter was a little disappointing if only because it was (a) so short and (b) didn't have the greatest sample of festivals. She chose to write about the Beautiful Feast of the Valley and the Festival of Amenhotep I. The Beautiful Feast is a good one to write on, yet I couldn't help but feel that there are plenty of other, more interesting festivals to talk about. What about Khoiak? Even the Sed Festival would have been more informative than Amenhotep I's (no offense intended toward him, of course!)

Teeter also talks about different forms of devotion for the average worshipper, including hermitage in one of the local temples. You'll also read about ancient Egyptian magic, its place in society, and much, much more.

My last criticism is I think Teeter tends to lean heavily on the "ancient peoples terrified of their world invented their religion so they could feel better" viewpoint. For sure, the ancient Egyptians found their religion comforting. But I'm not sure all of it was just for comfort and comfort alone.

Ancient Egypt has left us a lot of records of how her people lived. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell what people other than priests and kings did since only the elite were literate. Any book that contributes to our knowledge of personal piety (ie: the piety of the common people) is very much welcome.

If you're interested in ancient Egypt, I would recommend this book. If you are a Kemetic (worshipper of the ancient Egyptian gods), then I would also recommend this book. It's terrific. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Chapter 2
Archetypal Space and Sacred Sound
In every civilization there are consecrated sites and sacred places that are heavy with spiritual significance. Temples, caves, sanctuaries, or features such as rocks serve as vital points of contact and centres of accumulated energy. Such places, once consecrated according to traditional canon, acquire sanctity, and their 'enclosures' separate the archetypal sacred space from its surroundings. The two areas, the world within the enclosure and the world without, also stand for the psychological separation of man from his habitual concerns. The wall or fence or 'magic circle'- whatever form the enclosure takes - stands between the visible and the invisible and recalls the ritual separation of two distinct realities; the one that is sacred in which the divinity manifests itself and the other that is profane, the realm of mundane existence.
Once consecrated, even an insignificant stone will acquire uniqueness and spiritual significance. In India, one often comes across such objects where a sacred enclosure is marked: a simple stone daubed with vermilion is laid under a tree, or a sacred syllable or the name of a deity may be scribbled on the wall. Such images 'speak', 'move' and 'breathe' with life since they impart in a mysterious way a sense of primal reality. To a seeker who searches for meaning in such sites or images, the past participates in the present in that they preserve countless archetypal associations. Such a response necessarily puts out of balance all the notions of linear time of modern man, for whom the past is merely a dead sequence of events. The archetypal images, therefore, call for a new way of seeing through the sharpening of the innate faculties by which they were originally preserved. All such images, whether large or small, abstract or figurative, simple or sophisticated, recreate a celestial prototype and recapitulate the symbolism of the centre where the divine manifests itself, thus investing them with a spiritual value which is held to be ultimately real. The yantra enclosures follow a similar principle and accord with ancient intuitions.
In the Yajur Veda (23, 60-61), a passage describing a conversation between a devotee and the priest who performs the fire oblation summarizes this concept. The seeker questions:

Who knows this world's central point? Who knows the heavens, the earth, the wide air
between them?
Who knows the birthplace of the mighty Surya [sun]?
I ask thee of the earth's extremest limit, where is the centre of the world, I ask thee?

He is answered by the priest:

I know the centre of the world about us. I know heaven, earth, and wide air between
them.
I know the birthplace of the mighty Surya . . .
This altar is the earth's extremest limit; this sacrifice of ours is the world's centre.

Thus, although made of fragments of brick and mortar, the plinth of the fire altar is transformed into a cosmic entity and a spiritual centre, and the altar begins to exist in mystical 'time' and 'space' quite distinct from the profane. In the same way, the archetypal space of the yantra becomes a sacred entity recognized by the s�dhaka (aspirant).
In our ordinary perceptions we view space as an amorphous entity which is related to us in units of measurement. For us space is essentially quantitative; we understand it in terms of dimension, volume and distance. For the adept who uses yantras in yogic meditation, on the other hand, space enclosed within the bounded figure is purely qualitative; space is absolute void and unity is a 'sacrament' by means of which he communicates with a force that stands for life itself.
The yantra is an archetypal unit, and in the making of every new yantra the archetypal activity and the divine revelations repeat themselves. Each yantra's consecrated place acts as a dwelling for the gods, a space where movement from the level of profane existence to the level of profound realities is made possible. Symbol and meaning blend so closely that they are one reality, indistinguishable from one another. The yantra of the goddess Kali, for instance, is not merely her symbol but an indispensable complement of Kali herself, her total substance experienced through meditation on the 'metaphysical' spaces of her yantra. We not only perceive the yantra being 'of Kali, but 'understand' it as being one with the spirit of the goddess. It is said, therefore, that the wise 'know no difference between the goddess [Mahesi] and the yantra'.
Every yantra creates a power-field, a cosmicized circuit (kshetra) in which the powers of the sacred are invoked. The lines and planes localized within the yantra, though distinct from all the spaces that surround its outer circuit, are an expression of a transcendental reality. Stretching from star to star the ultimate substratum of all forms is space. Empty space is in itself a primordial substance and shares in the nature of divinity. Without it, the primordial substance whose abode is the whole universe would remain without support. Absolute void is defined by Indian philosophers as a limitless sea of undifferentiated continuum which is an everpresent entity not detachable from the relative, thus making all division of space illusory. So the spaces within a yantra, however minute, can be symbolically brought to 'presence' and expressed as being as immense as the spaces within the solar system. Although in the abstract this is the immutable principle on which the space concept of yantras functions, on the level of human experience we are led to locate the sacred by creating spatial divisions. The act of bounding the figure, 'fencing' its four quarters, defining its spatial orientations, delimiting the sacred territory of the yantra, is an act of asserting where sacred space begins to manifest.

Exhaustive Analysis of Yantras and the Philosophy behind it

This book details all kinds of historical Yantras as revealed in various Vedas (historic Hindu scriptures). Yantras are cosmic machines which directs energies to the human body/mind to attain various psychic states. The author dwells deeply in to the philosophy behind it, which in essence is Hinduism. Understanding the Hindu concept of the world, the cosmos and the human being is the key to unlocking the power of Yantra. A reader who is not exposed to Eastern religious philosophies will find it difficult to comprehend the description of concepts behind the Yantra.
This book has many illustrations of historic Yantras and details of the significance of its geometric drawings. I liked this book for the depth of analysis and the description of underlying concepts. Please note that this is NOT an instruction work book on Yantras which details about how to make a Yantra.
One disappointing fact is that the author uses little space to describe Occult Yantras which are commonly used by ordinary people for protection, healing and power. The Sri Yantra, which enables a person to attain higher states is described in detail. Overall this book gave me indepth knowledge about the working of a Yantra - the energized cosmic machine.

Surprisng that this book has only one review here, considering most everyone i know has a copy in their library, and considers this book a cornerstone of their collection.

This book provides detailed, concise info regarding what the different yantras represent and how they work. I would have appreciated more information about the pecularities of use for different traditions. In any case i can't recommend this book enough. Thank goodness this book has not gone out of print.

Abundant pictures and diagrams make it easy to follow its descriptions and explanations which open up a way of seeing things that may not have been previously accessible. This is a comprehensive work that offers the reader a wealth of information, leaving one with a deep appreciation for those who were so dedicated that they could penetrate the meaning of sacred symbols and enshrine their energy via the yantra.

One of the first utopian communities to emerge in the 1960s, Drop City, Colorado was founded as a self-supporting artist's enclave. In this entertaining chronicle, author and journalist Matthews (Smoke Jumping on the Western Fire Line) recounts Drop City's story as told to him by a number of its inhabitants, including co-founder Eugene Victor Debs Bernofsky, whose plan was to "own the property, build A-frame houses, pay no rent, make films and art and... put our trust in dose sic Cosmic Forces" (influenced by "Bucky" Fuller, the A-frames became the commune's iconic geodesic domes). As much a look at the sex-and-drugs counterculture as it is a cautionary tale about the problems of utopia-building, the story of Drop City almost comes to an early end over a mysteriously depleted can of government commodity peanut butter; ultimately, it would devolve into a disillusioned, dilapidated slum. Matthews's attempts to contextualize (or perhaps elevate) the narrative with historical notes on other U.S. communes and the hippie stomping grounds of Haight Ashbury distract from Bernofsky's tale, which is fascinating, inadvertently hilarious, and very telling. Drop City, arguably the first 1960s intentional community, inspired imitators through the mid-1970s before the whole commune ideal ran out of steam among inevitable personal differences and theoretical quibbles among core members. Artist Eugene Bernofsky, interviewed in depth for this book, was a driving force during Drop City’s brief flourishing. He and a cadre of like-minded artsy-craftsy folks built the commune’s various buildings by using “the detritus of society,” otherwise known as debris and scrap materials. Architecturally, the Droppers favored the geodesic domes of Buckminster Fuller, tricked out with colorful and inventive exteriors and eccentric interior decor. In 1967 they won Fuller’s Dymaxion Award for their efforts. Eventually, Drop City devolved as the communards went their separate ways, but Matthews digs deeply to create a comprehensive study of its occasionally wacky progress that is rather short on wackiness itself. Much more sociological account than sex-and-drugs memoir, this is a unique contribution to knowledge of an American period now receding in the mangled short-term memories of many who lived it. --Mike Tribby

TRUE GRIT

At last the true inside story of an inspirational group of youth compelled to have some creative fun during the Vietnam War disaster from which our country is still reeling. These droppers took their axes to auto junk yards and literally chopped out the tops of cars for building living domes. The story is beautifully presented by Mark Matthews who interviewed the founder of this non-intentional community for over a year. The story is inter-cut with powerful historical reportage of the Vietnam debacle. With the perpetual wars going on today and our Government seemingly unable to achieve peace, this brilliant book is particularly pertinent to the youth of today seeking creative meaning in their lives. If you're looking for something beyond all the daily depressing news, this book is for you!

Not only does this book describe the atmosphere and events surrounding the Viet Nam war, it incorporates the assimilation of an immigrant Eastern European family into American life. The development of America's first commune owes its idealism to the Bernofsky family's history and how their ideals influenced Eugene Bernofsky's vision. I found this book to be highly informative and extremely funny. The interviews with Mr. Bernofsky prove his razor sharp sense of humor while making a social commentary that documents a challenging time in America's history.

In contrast to much development thinking, which portrays ‘the poor’ as reliant upon benign assistance, this book advocates the concept of labour-centred development. Here ‘the poor’ are the global labouring classes, and their own collective actions and struggles constitute the basis of an alternative form of non-elitist, bottom-up human development.

About the Author

Caroline Case is an experienced Art Therapist and Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist working in a CAMHS team, in private practice and as a clinical supervisor. She has published widely on her work with children, but also works with adults. Her most recent publication is Imagining Animals: art, psychotherapy and primitive states of mind.

Tessa Dalley is an experienced Art Therapist who works in private practice and as a clinical supervisor. She is also a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist working in an in-patient adolescent unit and in the Parent-Infant Project at the Anna Freud Centre, London. She has published a number of books and articles and is currently editor of the International Journal of Art Therapy: Inscape.

Worth the money...

I have always bought haynes and chilton manuals in the past. I liked haynes better because they used actual photographs in their books rather than drawings. I was disappointed to see that both of these companies didn't offer a manual for this car yet. It's such a popular car so you would think they would. This is pretty much the only manual there is for the time being and it's EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! It's worth it though. I posted a few pics of mine. As you can see it is very thick and a very good quality hardcover book that will last. The first 20 or so pages are full color with diagrams of various major components of the car. The rest of the thousand or so pages have very detailed black and white photographs with arrows to show what the narratives are explaining. There are drawings too. For example, it shows step by step photographs to change your brake pads, but there are drawings that show clutch replacement. This isn't a huge issue though because the drawings are very well done. I would have posted pics of actual pages, but I'm sure the publisher wouldn't be too happy about that. Check their website for excerpts. The bottom line... I was nervous paying so much money for a manual when I have never used one from this company. Don't be. It is actually more detailed than a haynes or chilton manual making it the closest thing to an auto shop service manual you're ever gonna get.

INSPIRING!!! EYE-OPENING!!! INSIGHTFUL!!!

I just finished reading this book by Rabbi Kushner. It was an easy book to read and understand. I recently experienced the loss of my beloved brother. He was 36 years old and a murder victim. I am a practicing Catholic and I never questioned God. However, I found myself wondering why this had to happen to us. My brother was just an innocent bystander. A victim of being at that wrong place at the wrong time. Rabbi Kushner's book opened my eyes. His book offered me comfort and let me understand my faith a little better.
I highly recommend this book to all who question God. If you find yourself asking, "How could there be a God when bad things happen to good people?" get this book ASAP!! Rabbi Kushner offers a logical and intelligent answer to this question. He makes sense. If you think you are not a religious person this book will change that.
I am passing this book onto my mother. I know this will bring her comfort.
Thank you Rabbi Kushner for this wonderful insightful book. It has helped me with my grieving!

A unique perspective

The basic argument of the book is that bad things happen to good people because of others' poor choices and/or bad luck. Underlying this argument is the author's belief that God is powerless to stop (and therefore not responsible for) the tragedies we encounter in life. Whether this is comforting or not, I'm not sure, but it's an interesting perspective that raises interesting questions about the nature of God and His role in the universe, as belief in an omnipotent God is fundamental to many religious traditions. Regardless of whether one agrees with this argument, the author motivated it well enough to keep me engaged and keep me thinking about it after it ended.

Very comforting

Very comforting book for those who have lost a loved one or suffered through trauma. The author is a well-known Jewish rabbi, who, in my opinion, must have a direct connection to the man upstairs. And I am Roman Catholic! This book helped our family through the sudden loss of my husband's father in 1999. I reread it in 2016, after losing my own father who suffered terribly with heartbreaking dementia. And then I sent this book to all my siblings to help ease their grief.
