Save your Money

Don't waste your money on this book or it's Volume 2. From what I can tell there is very little original material worth paying for. The Authors have simply compiled formulas that you can get for free on the web. They do not add any of their own personal insight or further information or knowledge on the formulas other than writing them down.Some of the formulas were not even translated into English so without a translation they are useless. What a joke. The charge alot of money for the book and don't even go to the effort of having the formulas translated for their English readers. What a waste of money.

What the "Author" has done here is take material already published by other sources ( most of it available for free and made a cheap-o compendium of other peoples material. There is no original thought in this product. If it wasn't self published it wouldn't have been published at all.

About the Author
Graeme Macrae Burnet is one of Scotland's brightest literary talents. Born and brought up in Kilmarnock, he spent some years working as an English teacher in Prague, Bordeaux, Porto and London, before returning to Glasgow and working for eight years for various independent television companies. He has degrees in English Literature and International Security Studies from Glasgow and St Andrews universities respectively. His first novel, The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau (Contraband, 2014), received a New Writer's Award from the Scottish Book Trust, was longlisted for the Waverton Good Read Award and was a minor cult hit. Set in small-town France, it is a compelling psychological portrayal of a peculiar outsider pushed to the limit by his own feverish imagination. His second novel, His Bloody Project, has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2016. He is currently working on another novel featuring Georges Gorski, the haunted detective in The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau.

A fascinating read

4.5 stars. I first became aware of this book when the Man Booker long list was announced. I would like to try to read as many of them as possible and started with this one. For the first two thirds of the book, I wasn't quite sure why it was nominated for such a prestigious award. It was thoroughly enjoyable and I would have highly recommended it for that reason alone. It also provided an interesting twist on the crime novel in that it is written entirely in document form - police interviews with the villagers who knew the murder victims and the accused, medical examiner reports, a memoir purportedly written by the accused, an account by a preeminent criminal psychologist who interviewed the accused, his father and villagers and, finally, a report of the trial. The author also managed to write all of these various documents in voices that were true to the period. There were also interesting insights into classism, family dynamics, and the dynamics between residents in a small village.

Then the last third of the book happened and I was blown away. Those bits of the story that had niggled at your brain from earlier on that weren't properly addressed came into play. One is left with questions regarding the justice system, the death penalty and criminal insanity - particularly, in this instance, the diagnosis of it and what it would mean for the individual (either hanging or a life, likely spent in an asylum). Class issues are raised in this section as well. It was here that I really saw what the Man Booker judges did as well as gained a better appreciation of the earlier parts of this book. This doesn't mean that I feel it should necessarily win the prize (I won't make any such determination yet), but I can see why it was nominated.

This review may seem spoilerish, but I was careful to make sure that it isn't. I haven't included any information that one can't glean from the blurb, the table of contents or the first few pages. Now, stop reading this review and go read this book!

True Crime (or not) in Scottish Fiction

In the spring of 2014, I embarked on a project to find out a
little about my grandfather, Donald 'Tramp' Macrae, who was
born in 1890 in Applecross, two or three miles north of Culduie.
It was in the course of my research at the Highland Archive
Centre in Inverness that I came across some newspaper clippings
describing the trial of Roderick Macrae, and with the assistance
of Anne O'Hanlon, the archivist there, discovered the manuscript
which comprises the largest part of this volume.

Immediately upon finishing this latest Man Booker nominee, I turned back to the author's introduction to check whether I had been reading genuine documents about a true case, or the imaginative products of a clever author with an uncanny sense of style. I think the latter, but even now I cannot be quite sure. The larger part of this book is, as Macrae Burnet tells us, the memoir written in 1869 by 17-year-old Roderick John Macrae at the request of his solicitor while he is awaiting trial in Inverness Castle. He freely admits to killing Lachlan Mackenzie (commonly known as Lachlan Broad) and two other people in the former's house in Culduie, Wester Ross, in order to relieve his father of the persecution he was suffering at Mackenzie's hands. From beginning to end of the book, there is no dispute about these facts; all that remains to be filled in are the details, motivation, and the question of moral guilt.

Roddy Macrae's memoir takes up the first half of the book. It is preceded by various written statements made at the time by neighbors, the local schoolteacher, and the Presbyterian minister, which show a wide variety of opinions, revealing the character of each writer quite as much as that of their subject. It is an extraordinarily compact way of depicting the small crofting community, the various rivalries within it, and the constricting power of the Kirk. The latter part of the book consists of reports of the trial and its aftermath. Burnet is pitch-perfect in capturing the tone of depositions, official documents, and newspaper reports, but nothing is astounding as Roddy's narrative itself, which not only nails the style of 19th-century Scots prose* (think Stevenson) but also recreates the social and moral world in which the tragedy plays itself out.

Culduie is a real place, on the west coast of Scotland a little bit north of the Isle of Skye. Beautiful though it seems to tourist eyes, in the 19th-century it must have been a place of feudal squalor. Here and elsewhere, huge swaths of coast and mountain would be owned by a Laird, and used largely for the purpose of hunting and fishing. The lands would be managed by a Factor, who would assign local jurisdiction to a Constable elected from each area. The crofters lived in little more than hovels, occupying their houses and farming their land at the pleasure of the Laird, and subject to arbitrary rulings on the part of the Constable. Reading this portion of the book made me very angry indeed, not only at the grossly unfair exercise of class privilege, but at the bovine acceptance of it by most of the local people. Here is a snatch of conversation overheard by Roddy at the annual Highland Gathering:

I fell in behind two well-dressed gentlemen and eavesdropped on
their conversation. The first declared in a loud voice, 'It is
easy to forget that such primitives still exist in our country.'
His companion nodded solemnly and wondered aloud whether more
might be done for us. The first gentleman then expressed the
view that it was difficult to assist people who were so incapable
of doing anything for themselves. They then paused to drink from
a flask and watch a knot of girls pass by.

This attitude is echoed by that of the Presbyterian Minister, Mr. Galbraith, who speaks of "a savagism" that the Church has only been partially successful in suppressing. He has no difficulty in asserting that Roddy is a throwback to the primitive type, a noxious individual, enslaved to the Devil. Burnet may have used Galbraith as a scathing example of religion at its worst and least compassionate (he based him, apparently, on a real figure), but there is another aspect to his Presbyterianism that is not much developed in the novel, but which I see as centrally important. The willingness of Roddy's father and his sister Jetta to submit to Lachlan Broad's tyranny is the Calvinist doctrine of Predestination in its crudest form:

You must not say such things, Roddy. If you understood more about
the world, your would see that Lachlan Broad is not responsible.
It is providence that has brought us to this point. It is no more
Lachlan Broad's doing than yours or mine or Father's.

Jetta, who has second sight, tells him that she has foreseen Lachlan's death. The combination of Gaelic superstition and Presbyterian fatalism finally propels Roddy to his act. So we see two theories of his crime: class and religion. The trial, however, will focus on the question of mental confidence. But here we discover something else: that Roddy is not the trustworthy narrator we had thought.** All along, we have been proceeding towards understanding and even sympathy—but then something happens to kick us in the gut. From this horrendous point on, halfway through the book, neither Roddy nor the author is any more to be trusted. The novel becomes a genuine cliffhanger, even as it sinks deeper into tragedy. It is really a superb achievement.

Also as in Stevenson, the text is scattered with dialect Scots words—including the two murder weapons, a croman and a flaughter. Oddly enough, Burnet places his glossary halfway through the book (54% in my Kindle edition). Sassenach readers would be well advised to bookmark it!

In terms of the combination of unreliable narrator with a 19th-century Scottish crime drama, I thought of the novels of Jane Harris, GILLESPIE AND I and THE OBSERVATIONS. Reviews have also compared HIS BLOODY PROJECT to books such as Margaret Atwood's ALIAS GRACE and James Robertson's TESTAMENT OF GIDEON MACK. I am sure many other comparisons are possible. But that does not lessen the stunning originality of the book we have.

Superbly written look into a murder

The case of Roderick Macrae is given a thorough review in this novel. The writer has wonderfully captured the historical nature of the times. Through this lens, the story lays out a murder case in such away to give the reader an interesting read. The state of Roderick's mind at the time is the real mystery here and one that is never 100% satisfyingly answered. Well worth the read.

About the Author
Michele Davidson [COPY TO COME for Michele Davidson] Marcia L. London Marcia L. London has been able to combine her two greatest passions by being both a nurse caring for children and families and a teacher for almost 35 years. She received her B.S.N. and school nurse certificate from Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York. After graduation, she began her nursing career as a pediatric nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City then moved to Pittsburgh, where she began her teaching career. Mrs. London accepted a faculty position at Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital Affiliate Program and received her M.S.N. in pediatrics as a clinical nurse specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. Mrs. London began teaching at Beth-El School of Nursing and Health Science in 1974 after opening the first intensive care nursery at Memorial Hospital of Colorado Springs. She has served in many administrative and faculty positions at Beth-El, including coordinator for nursing care of children for 32 years. Mrs. London maintains her clinical skills working in an urgent care and after-hours clinic and doing undergraduate pediatric clinical supervision. She obtained her postmaster's neonatal nurse practitioner certificate in 1983 and subsequently developed the neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) program and the master's NNP program at Beth-El. She is active nationally in neonatal nursing and was involved in the development of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Educational Program Guidelines. She has contributed 5 chapters to various neonatal nursing texts. Mrs. London is active in nurse practitioner education in general. She was involved in the revision of the Core Competency for NursePractitioners and Curriculum Guidelines for Nurse Practitioner Education, as a member of the Education Committee of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and participated as part of the Core Competency Validation Expert Panel. Mrs. London has also pursued her interest in college student learning by taking doctoral classes in higher education administration and adult learning at the University of Denver in Colorado. She feels fortunate to be involved in the education of her future colleagues. Her teaching philosophy is that, with support, students can achieve more than they may initially believe they are capable of achieving. Mrs. London and her husband have two sons and one dog (Reilly, daughter by proxy). Her two sons, Craig and Matthew, are involved in computer informatics, and media arts and animation and are more than willing to give Mom helpful hints. Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig received her B.S. from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. After graduation, she worked as a pediatric nurse before joining the U.S. Air Force. After completing her tour of duty, Dr. Ladewig relocated at Florida, where she accepted a faculty position at Florida State University. There she embraced teaching as her calling. Over the years, she taught at several schools of nursing while earning her M.S.N. in maternal-newborn nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and her Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Denver in Colorado. In addition, she became a women's health nurse practitioner and maintained a part-time clinical practice. In 1988 Dr. Ladewig became the first director of the nursingprogram at Regis College in Denver and., in 1991, when the college became Regis University, she became dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions. Under her guidance, the Department of Nursing has added a graduate program and the School has added three departments: the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Health Services Administration and Management, and the Department of Health Care Ethics. Dr. Ladewig feels that teaching others to be excellent, caring nurses gives her the best of all worlds because it keeps her in touch with the profession she loves and enables her to help shape the future of the nursing profession. When not at work or writing textbooks, Pat and her husband, Tim, enjoy skiing, baseball games, and traveling. However their greatest pleasure comes from their family: son Ryan, his wife, Amanda, and grandson Reed; and son, Erik, his wife Kedri, and granddaughter Emma.

So disorganized!

I bought this textbook because it's the required one for my class. It is AWFUL. It is so freaking disorganized that I spend more time looking for what I want to know in the index and then flipping between several chapters than I do actually learning anything from it. Instead of being organized in some logical sequence, it's divided up into several chapters covering the same topic spread throughout the book. For example, there's one chapter on normal labor physiology, a different one on nursing interventions during labor, and a third one about the pain management available for normal labor, and then another one for the woman's/family's response to the labor. And that's just for the normal labors. The pathos are spread throughout the rest of the book. And you better hope you never get a timed take-home using this book because you will run out of time on the 3rd question if you don't know your stuff without having to look it up.

Great textbook

Bought this textbook because it was required for my nursing class. According to upperclassmen, my school actually used to have a different textbook which was so difficult to read and understand so they changed it to this one. This textbook is definitely more student-friendly. Easy to read and understand, and several illustrations to help guide concepts. I like how it highlights essential need-to-knows every now and then for important concepts. I got an A in my class, and got lots of questions on exams correct because I remembered them directly from reading the book even though they were not reviewed during lecture. If you're genuinely interested in this nursing material and can be patient enough to read, this book is really great. Don't forget to utilize your online resources with the companion website! You can do practice quizzes for every chapter to assess your understanding!

Horrible read, very scattered.

This book is terrible. It is poorly organized and takes you all over the place for one topic. I've never seen a book that refers to another chapter (s) for more information on so many different topics. How about we explain it completely in one topic so I'm not flipping all over the book to find the information I need? No questions to challenge your knowledge/ learning, that's a first as well. I bought it for a class and wish they had very read the book before they decided to make it the required textbook. It covers the information well enough but it is irritating flipping through many chapters to get all of the information for one topic. Very scattered.

Ridiculous

How has this author published 150 novels? This book is junk! There's no plot... just The Big Misunderstanding. Neither character has any depth or personality, and neither is very likable. After a one night stand, Bella doesn't tell Gabriel she's pregnant because she's upset he didn't call her (even though she knew he was in the hospital). When he learns about his four-year-old son, he coerces her into marrying him, threatening to use his money and influence to get custody. They both seem to hate each other, and yet [SPOILER! Well, sort of...] it turns out they've both been madly in love with each other for five years. However, the author doesn't establish any reason why they love each other.

The writing is as ridiculous as the plot. Mortimer's prose is cluttered with long, clunky sentences and an absurd number of exclamation points! OMG! It's so silly!

Disappointing book.

The female protagonist grated on my nerves. I just couldn't quite sympathize with her. I think the fact that she never once tried to contact Gabriel once she knew she was pregnant seemed very selfish. It felt almost like she did it out of revenge because Gabriel didn't call her after their passionate night together... even though she knew the man was in the hospital due to a racing accident later that day!! Hello! The man can't call you if he's not conscious!

Gabriel Danti a young, gorgeous, sexy, rich race car driver met Isabella Scott one night and sparks went flying all over the place. Gabriel promised to call her as he left her that morning but because of the accident that day in which two other drivers died and his own injuries prevented that call from ever happening . Bella saw Gabriel's ex girlfriend on TV that day talking about how Gabriel caused that accident because he was jealous of her relationship with one of the two guys that had died. I loved Gabriel and the more I read the more I liked him. He was angry when he found out he had fathered a child that was now four years old but still he was not as angry as Bella was. I know she got pregnant, and he didn't call, but really she was an ass for not even trying to call him. Through the whole story he was trying, and she kept slamming him, but he kept on coming back...you had to admire the workmanship. I liked the story and the writing by Ms Mortimer as always was impeccable. I recommend this book highly.

GOOD MANUAL BUT PRICEY

I am a dam engineer, working for an italian consulting company.
Foundations on rock is a good manual, being a reference book in our firm together with US army corps manuals.
Please consider that the author often follows Hoek's empirical approach for rock mechanics ( he wrote the update of one of Hoek books ).
Therefore I think you should buy this book if you like Hoek's approach.
This book includes several practical examples together with a complete description of the theory behind.
The only drawback of this book, on my opinion, is its price. Because of its price this book aims at the professionals market only.
