Finally, a Practical Guide for On the Job Training

I was completing my graduate degree when I started a search for sound practical material related to on the job training. (OJT) Much of what I found was weak, until I came across Dr. Rothwell's book.
This is an excellent book for someone responsible for OJT directly or even indirectly, ex. a Human Resources Manager. Dr. Rothwell provides a very clear and easy to follow format for establishing or fixing a broken OJT system.
I'm an HR Manager, and I used Dr. Rothwell's book as a part of a training program for our employee trainers who train our new and existing employees. They would read material assigned from the book and then make application to problems we experienced in our training. Using a facilitative style of training, in addition to the book for follow-up, provided for a good transfer of learning.
I highly recommend this for someone willing to put the effort into implementing or repairing an existing OJT process.

Disappointing

I was disappointed in this book. It's 10 years old (almost), so references to studies in the 1970's and 1980's seem outdated, leading me to doubt their applicability. I found Gary Sisson's "Hands-On Training" much more helpful for my training needs, and a better use of my company's money.

About the Author
Richard M. Gargiulo is Professor Emeritus of special education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he has been a teacher educator for more than three decades. Prior to receiving his Ph.D. degree in educational psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Richard taught fourth graders and young children with intellectual disability in the Milwaukee Public Schools. Upon receiving his doctorate he joined the faculty of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, where he taught for over eight years. A frequent contributor to the professional literature, Richard has authored or coauthored over 100 publications, including sixteen textbooks. His previous professional contributions include serving as the first Fulbright Scholar in special education assigned to the former Czechoslovakia; being twice elected as President of the Alabama Federation, Council for Exceptional Children; serving as President of the Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES), Council for Exceptional Children; and serving as President of the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities (DADD), Council for Exceptional Children. Currently, Richard serves as the Southeast Representative to the board of directors of the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Teaching, however, has always been Richard's passion. In 1999 he received UAB's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2007 he was honored by the Alabama Federation, Council for Exceptional Children, with the Jasper Harvey Award in recognition of being named the outstanding teacher educator in the state.

Debbie Metcalf has worked in partnership with Pitt County Schools and East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina as a special educator and intervention specialist for Pitt County Schools and as a Teacher-in-Residence in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at East Carolina University for fifteen years. She currently teaches methods courses and works in the classroom with undergraduate preservice teachers. Debbie holds a Master of Arts in Education degree from San Diego State University and is certified in both general and special education, including assistive technology. She became a National Board Certified Teacher in 1997. In 2004, she was awarded the Clarissa Hug Teacher of the Year Award from the International Council for Exceptional Children. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Council for Exceptional Children and is active in the Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES). Debbie has taught students of all ages for over 30 years in California, New Mexico, Hawaii, Michigan, and North Carolina. She continues to mentor new teachers and teachers pursuing National Board Certification. Her primary research areas include access to the general curriculum for students with exceptionalities, collaborative teaching models, alternate assessment models for diverse learners, curriculum design and revision, alignment, and service learning.

About the Author
Linda K. Sienkiewicz is a published poet and fiction writer, cynical optimist, fan of corgis, tea drinker, and wine lover from Michigan. Her poetry, short stories, and art have been published in more than fifty literary journals, including Prairie Schooner, Clackamas Literary Review, Spoon River, and Permafrost. She received a poetry chapbook award from Bottom Dog Press, and an MFA from the University of Southern Maine. Linda lives with her husband in southeast Michigan, where they spoil their grandchildren and then send them back home.

An engaging and intriguing human story.

Despite the bleak beginning of “Context,” when Angelica takes her two children to see their father, Gavin, in prison, the novel turns into a love story with many surprises and twists of plot. Written as a love letter to Angelica's first love, Joe Vardas, Sienkiewicz’s narrative offers complex characters and unexpected plot twists. She has crafted a tale that maintains tension throughout, from the early scenes of high school romance and Joe’s mysterious disappearance, to revelations of dark secrets which Angie discovers as the story progresses.

The book is a page-turner, in part because of the uncertainty about Joe’s fate, but also because Angie encounters surprises which change her concept of who she is. She is a questioner, and with her, we question the significance of all that she finds; we experience what she experiences.

Another unique aspect of the book is the author’s subtle irony. Her depiction of Gavin’s dysfunctional family (“They never receive guests, and they couldn’t renovate a dog house,” Gavin tells her) is astute and detailed. The voice of the author moves from serious , intense and questioning to ironic, and she provides realistic pictures of characters which help to understand their temperaments and origins.

I strongly recommend this book as an engaging, very human story.

Heart and Soul Mates

This novel loosely takes the form of a letter to a first love from the perspective of many years later. The main character has a story to tell, and she's most interested in sharing it with the love of her life, who is also the one that got away. After a brief intense high school romance, scandal and circumstances tear these two apart and she spends years trying to recover from the split and another family betrayal. A completely unexpected turn in this good-girl into someone even she doesn't recognize lead to bad choices and consequences she could not have foreseen. How she is able to finally stand tall again comes out in her story to the lost love. Sienkiewicz is a poet and it shows in the language, which is exquisite and careful but never weighs down the plot, which carried me through to the end in one reading. I couldn't put it down, couldn't wait to see how the author would resolve this deep heartache. I was not disappointed. This moving story of fated soul mates and the author's unique narrative voice make this book one not to be missed.

"This is what happened after you left without a word." In the Context of Love is written as a one-sided conversation with Angelica's first love, who, fifteen years later, had become "the scapegoat for everything that had gone wrong in the last fifteen years."

The prose is beautiful, even when the action is gritty. She leads the reader unflinchingly through first love, and the joy, lust, and pain that left a young girl's life permanently altered.

"Your kisses tasted like freedom."
"I wanted to be the opposite of my mother... I was sure I knew more about sex than she did."

Angelica's mother, once nurturing, turns overprotective and obsessive as her daughter begins to grow up. Angelica clashes with her mother, unable to understand that the overprotective behavior is rooted in secrets so deep and so explosive that they will eventually fracture the family.

Will touch your heart, make you think, and inspire you to be your best

I love all of Jon's books but this one is particularly special for several reasons. First it is a true story about an amazing young man whose example continues to influence others more than ten years after his death. If you can read this without being emotionally touched you might want to check your pulse.

Second, while there are thousands of books with strategies to be a leader there are far fewer on how to lead by being a follower and by being a servant. What so inspired me about George's story was the way he became a leader without trying to be a leader.

And third, the book is filled with lots of great ideas for being a better teammate and a better friend - and a better person.

Touching Story of Someone Who Made a Difference in Such a Short Time

Having read all of Jon Gordon's other books, picking this one up was a no brainer. Very quickly I realized that this book was very different from the others. After reading this book you can add my life to the number of people that George has touched and made better. I strongly recommend this book for anyone that wants more from life. In reading this book it has cemented the realization that to get more from life I have to be and give more. Thank you George!

Wonderful to have both books in one volume

I have used both volume 1 and volume 2 for years, both or myself and for my students. I am delighted to find both Volumes in one book.

The CD accompaniment is useful for those who on't read music flawlessly, or who don't play the piano. Just remember that as the singer, you are not in charge of the tempi or phrasing that you would be in a live performance.

I bought this in all of the different keys available, for use with my students who sing in different ranges, and most songs work in all of the keys supplied.

Old American Songs Complete Low Voice (Bk/CD) with Piano Accompaniments

I am a university profesor in Zagreb, Croatia where I have mixed voices in my two large classes of Voice and Opera training.
This is a standard rep for both basse and baritons and also for mezzo with no top.

Love the score. Perfect for my voice range.

Although the copy I bought was advertised "new," it was not. A name was written in the front, markings were on the score, and the CD had been torn out and taped by in.
