Even if you don't plan to take the exam

Usually, I dislike certification test prep books: they don't tell you much about the topic so much as tell you how to answer certain questions for the test. For example, almost every Microsoft network-oriented test seems to require a slightly different understanding of TCP/IP than the rest of the world uses, based on the books I've seen.
This book was different. Sure, there's all the study guide/sample tests/quizzes and the other standard appurtenances used in certification books (I liked the "exam tips") but there is also a real world orientation here. The authors add "real world" notes throughout, so you can use this one when you need an answer, not just to cram for a test.
I haven't gotten to the CD, though I imagine it's got the usual stuff on it--one thing, though, is you can only use the "test engine" under Windows. Bleah. But you can get the same content under Linux in .pdf format.
The really neat thing, for me, was the "lab exercises". This is what makes a big difference: you can actually use this text to fill in the blanks in your skills, not just to pass the exam.
I've never gotten any technical certification, but this book is inspiring me. Who knows, maybe I'll find the time to get certified.

Most Complete LPIC Book

This book has more information than the other LPIC prep books. This is not hard since the main competition is Exam Cram and Nutshell, both of which are by definition succinct. There are not many LPIC books out there, so if you are studying for the exam, you probably want this most complete one.
One thing I found annoying was that chapters dealing with exam 101 and exam 102 objectives are intermingled throughout the book. One chapter includes both 101 and 102 objectives. I had already passed the 101 exam when this book came out, which partly explains my irritation. Why do authors have the rearrange there the exam objectives into their own chapters? I would prefer a book structured by exam objectives.
This book inlcudes a lot of mock exam questions, both in chapter tests and on the CD, which adds to its value for exam preparation.

Very to the point and exam centric

Having gone thru the first few chapters, I get the feeling that the book is very focussed on the exams it tries to get you thru, and is pretty to-the-point in arrangement of topics.
Also the study guides and sample questions make it helpful in getting a grip on what the exam would feel like, for someone giving the LPI exams the first time (and hopefully the last time too).
Unlike Rute's Linux user tutorial which also caters to LPI exma sbut is more focussed toward learning Linux first and passing exams second, this book is more focussed towards passing exam more than the full internals of Linux.
Having both books by your side is of course the best thing.

About the Author
R. Wane Schneiter, PhD, PE, is Emeritus Dean of the Faculty at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Prior to his appointment as dean, he served as the head of VMI’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and held the Benjamin H. Powell Jr. ’36 Professorship in Engineering. His professional engineering activities have included consulting services on environmental issues to a wide array of public and private clients. He holds bachelor of science and doctorate degrees in civil engineering from Utah State University.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Six-Minute Solutions for Civil PE Exam Water Resources and Environmental Depth Problems is organized into nine chapters. Each chapter contains problems that correspond to the format and scope that would be expected to appear in the civil PE exam’s water resources and environmental depth section.

Most of the problems are quantitative, requiring calculations to arrive at a correct solution. A few are nonquantitative. Some problems will require a little more than 6 minutes to answer, and others require a little less. On average, during the exam you should expect to complete 80 problems in 480 minutes (8 hours), or spend 6 minutes per problem.

The solutions are presented in a step-by-step sequence to help you follow the logical development of the correct solution and to provide examples of how you may want to approach your solutions as you take the PE exam.

Each problem includes a hint to provide direction in solving the problem. In addition to the correct solution, you will find an explanation of the faulty solutionsleading to the three incorrect answer options. The incorrect options are intended to represent common mistakes specific to different problem types. These may be simple mathematical errors, such as failing to square a term in an equation, or more serious errors, such as using the wrong equation.

Though you will not encounter problems on the exam exactly like those presented in this book, reviewing these problems and solutions will increase your familiarity with the exam problems’ format, content, and solution methods. This preparation will help you considerably during the exam.

About the Author

Satyam Suwas is an Associate Professor of Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (I.I.Sc.) Bangalore, India. He obtained his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India.� Prior to joining I.I.Sc., he worked briefly at Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory Hyderabad as a Scientist, at University of Metz in France as a Visiting Faculty and at RWTH Aachen in Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. His research interests are crystallographic texture evolution and grain boundary engineering in structural and functional materials. He has published over 140 papers in international journals and conference proceedings.

Ranjit Kumar Ray was a Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.) Kanpur, India from where he retired after several decades of distinguished teaching and research career. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham, UK. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at RWTH Aachen and NSERC Fellow at McGill University, Canada. He has over 200 technical publications in international journals and conference proceedings to his credit. He is currently serving as a Visiting Scientist, Tata Steel Jamshedpur. His research interests are texture-microstructure-property correlations in materials, particularly steels.

I cannot recommend this text highly enough: I personally found its earlier edition invaluable as a student during practical exams and clinical placements. For those seeking more extensive information on treatment options Petty's earlier text, Principles of Neuromusculoskeletal Treatment and Management- A guide for Therapists, serves as an excellent companion.

A Book that Applies Attachment Theories to Marriage Relationships

The attachment theory primarily describes the experiences children have with their caregiver and how those experiences inform their life decisions. I was interested in how the author had applied this theory to couple relationships. The author is very methodical in explaining his clinical approach and the methods he used. I found this aspect a little boring since I am not a clinician however, I found a lot of useful information throughout the text. The author defines four types of attachments: secure, preoccupied, fearful and dismissing. He also describes couples who combine the same or different types of attachment styles. The second half of the book contains a number of chapters about specific extreme cases that are pertinent to clinicians. His recommendation for treatment is that the couple participate in psychotherapy where the clinician performs the function of a "secure base" and the couple attaches and then explores solutions to their individual issues while engaging in a joint discussion.

It's kind of boring read. I kept falling asleep as I read it. The information is useful, but it's very dry writing. I probably wouldn't purchase it again.

A must read book for every HSP.

I first heard about the term HSP a few years back. (It was a term coined by Dr. Elaine Aron.) As soon as I read many of the symptoms I thought... “this definitely describes me.”

Here are a few indicators that I have seen in myself (and other HSPs):

**Highly bothered by sound, noise, chaos. (Overstimulated)
**Likes quiet
**Decides slowly
**Prone to anxiety
**Get upset if a “wrong: decision is made”
**Worries about others reactions
**Detail oriented
**Hypersentitive

An HSP is sort of like a supercharged introvert. (Although not all HSP are introverts)

Barrie has done a wonderful job explaining what it is to be an HSP. Why this can make someone special. How to find out if you are an HSP. How to deal with an HSP child. How to avoid depression and anxiety as an HSP. The differences between HSP’s and Empaths. How to make the most of being an HSP and a whole lot more.

I highly recommend this book for any HSP or anyone who has a close family member who is an HSP.

Perhaps this book serves well for those requiring affirmations; ostensibly this is its greatest contribution. It predominately relies on the commentary of HSP's referencing their various tribulations, (the same type of commentary left on numerous blog sites). Its intent seems to be to re-frame the negative implications that may come along with HSP's tendencies.

For someone not seeking affirmation of themselves through a sense of community, I doubt there would be any relevant benefit that would go beyond what is readily available to everyone on the internet.The book assumes that shame is an automatic response to increased sensitivity and projects that strong emotions equate to emotional outbursts. As a highly sensitive person, I found it troublesomely ironic that the author would choose to employ the emotionally draining experiences of others as a way to convey the challenges HSP's face. Hoping for some compensatory insight I pushed forward, eventually only scanning a few words of each commentor, but never found a revelation that could justify its cost to me. I hoped to find redemption in the final chapter, Managing Daily Life. There were some practical considerations that might have otherwise been overlooked by readers, but in most other areas I found a dismissal of the HSP's innate tendencies. As a general rule, HSP's do not like routines;14 are suggested. As noted in authoritative publications, HSP's naturally arrange their environments to accommodate their sensitivities, rendering most of the recommendations pointless.

I do not at all relish in making critical remarks, but at the same time I carry of sense of obligation to others like myself who are looking for depth and accountability. They will find much more already existing in themselves than they will find in these pages.

What a Difference This Book Made in My Life

Oh, how I wish I had known this information years ago when I was starting out in life! What a difference it could have made in the way I saw myself and interacted with others in personal relationships and also at work with coworkers and supervisors!

But it’s not too late to learn, and I was personally reassured and uplifted by what this book explained to me. The author has shared in a friendly, readable way the background of HSP, the tools to use to better cope with life, current information to review, and detailed exercises to give me a whole new outlook!

Thank you, Barrie Davenport, for sharing what you’ve learned and making it available to people in an understandable, non-scientific manner. You’ve made a difference in my life!

Graham Turner has been for many years a nationally known, award-winning journalist in Britain. He was the BBC s first economics correspondent and worked for the Sunday Times, the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, the Observer and the Daily Mail. His other books include a biography of Queen Elizabeth, based on intimate conversations with many of her family and friends. He has one wife, three children and one cat.

Though I have read numerous biographies of Gandhi, this one was my favorite. The book did an outstanding job of avoiding hagiography and really let the reader know the human sacrifices Gandhi made to achieve his objectives. And if there was one human quality that was echoed over and over it was Gandhi's perseverance. The book was also very easy to read and extremely interesting in revealing many new facts which I previously did not know.
