This is tough... how can I laud the book and yet chastise the publisher in just 1 review...

I think the title says it best; if you read other user reviews you will see that this book is easily one of the best books in the field. Clearly and succinctly written. I am really happy with the content.

However... the quality of the book itself is just another notch in the long history of publishers taking highest advantage of collegiate level texts and the students that purchase them.

I am used to the $100-$180 text. I like new books, and keep them in good condition, so I generally suck it up and pay the hefty price. Yes... I feed the publishing beast. But I typically get solid, high quality books and keep them that way for many years.

This was the first time that I was severely disappointed with what I ended up with. $140... and a shoddily-bound softcover book arrived on my doorstep. The binding glue is one of the cheaper ones I have run into. A little too much pressure on the binding and it cracks open, loosely scattering the few pages who final, tenuous grasp on the binding glue was just not strong enough. By itself, no section of the book will rest open for easy at-a-glance reference.

Just a few sentences, but this sums up my conundrum. Kudos and kudos again to Dr. Gonzalez for taking the time to put together such an excellent text.Shame on the publishers for doing what they do best: provide exclusive content from a single source for a premium, and continuously lessening the quality of the product by packaging it so terribly. I'd advise finding the book through another source but... this is the nature of publishing.

It is a book that explains Microwave Transistor Amplifiers, while slowly falling apart.

It conveys information in a short time. The paperback is literally falling apart, and this happened with several students in my class. As a manufacturer of books, I would think the company would design for this not to happen, but the block of glue does a clumsy job of keeping things together when a student is trying to read what in the world is going on with these insane circles, charts, transmission lines and other things the author does a good job of explaining.
However, the convention used for the Smith charts in the the first couple chapters is hard to follow, in my opinion. Some examples have a tendency to skip steps leaving the newbie reader to madly scramble for the equations until he finds the right one that works.

Excellent book in microwave amplifier design

This book covered extensive techniques in amplifier design, mostly for small signal amplifiers (LNA), but less for PA. The content in this book follows a systematic way, which is good to the people who want to start from 'zero'. Examples are rich in 2nd ed., and explanations are clear. I found this book quite useful for learning basic techniques in amplifier design. As stated in the book, the techniques are applicable to not only microwave frequency, but other frequency ranges as long as S-parameters are available. There are 'huge' amount of smith charts involved in this book, so it's good for people who prefer graphical design approaches, which basically rely on the use of smith chart. For those who are interested in more specific kind of design, like broadband LNA design, this book may not be the first choice.

The only annoying thing about the book is the binding. I paid the price for a hardcover only to get a paperback. Besides, the binding quality is quite poor (loose page after regular use, printed on wrong paper grain direction,...), and I sent my copy to have it rebound eventually.

Excellent

Some of the authors are harder to digest than others. Fair amount of jargon. But if you are curious and patient, this is an excellent reader and reference for laypersons as well as professionals. Serious scholarship and useful notes. Considerations are given to both biological/genetic causes as well as developmental causes of criminal behavior.

This book is insightful if you are interested in personality disorders generally. Many of the essays explore the connections of psychopathy with borderline and narcissistic personality disorder, with an expected focus on narcissism. What I found particularly fascinating were theories regarding the nature of the hostility rooted in all such disorders. I came away thinking that "malignant narcissism", or "aggressive narcissism", as Meloy puts it, are far more accurate and descriptive terms than "psychopathy".

This book covers the puzzling subject of a lack of a conscience that is very in-depth, which attempts to analyze the problem without wholly depending on moral or theological considerations. I suggest this reading for anyone who wishes to gain deeper insight into a most perplexing and troubling human matter.

During this long war many heroes emerged, but none more skillful and courageous than Captain Darrell Watt of the Rhodesian SAS, who placed himself at the tip of the spear in the deadly battle to resist the forces of Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo.

It is difficult to find another soldier’s story to equal Watt’s in terms of time spent on the field of battle and challenges faced. Even by the lofty standards of the SAS and Special Forces, one has to look far to find anyone who can match his record of resilience and valor in the face of such daunting odds and with resources so paltry. In the fight he showed himself to be a military maestro. A bush-lore genius, blessed with uncanny instincts and an unbridled determination to close with the enemy, he had no peers as a combat-tracker (and there was plenty of competition). But the Rhodesian theater was a fluid and volatile one in which he performed in almost every imaginable fighting role; as an airborne shock-trooper leading camp attacks, long range reconnaissance operator, covert urban operator, sniper, saboteur, seek-and-strike expert, and in the final stages as a key figure in mobilizing an allied army in neighboring Mozambique.

After 12 years in the cauldron of war his cause slipped from beneath him, however, and Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe. When the guns went quiet Watt had won all his battles but lost the war. In this fascinating biography we learn that in his twilight years he is now concerned with saving wildlife on a continent where they are in continued danger, devoting himself to both the fauna and African people he has cared so deeply about.

Hannes Wessels was born in 1956 in Salisbury and grew up on the Mozambique border. He left school to become a combat soldier and saw lots of action. His book is a paean to the greatest soldier he got to know well, Captain Darrell Watt, of the Rhodesian SAS and Special Forces. Watt won all his battles but eventually, thanks to Lord Carrington and gang, lost the war. For 12 long years in the cauldron of war Captain Watt never lost a battle, exhibiting Spartan-like bravery and better than Spartan-like ingenuity in combating far, far superior forces. The Rhodesian SAS amounted to just an incredible-to-believe 250 men. About the Author
Hannes Wessels was born in 1956 in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) but grew up in Umtali on the Mozambican border. As a boy, holidays were spent with Game Department rangers; time on safari in Mozambique with the late Wally Johnson was a big influence on him. Wessels also grew to know Robert Ruark whose love of Africa, its people, politics and the written word left a lasting impression. He saw action in the Rhodesian bush war before acquiring a law degree which he chose not to use. He has hunted big game in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania in a 20-year career. In 1994 he was severely gored by a wounded buffalo which almost cost him his life. While no longer directly involved in hunting, he is part-owner of a lodge and game ranch in Zambia on the Zambezi and remains keenly interested in all matters relating to African wildlife and conservation. He has published Strange Tales from Africa in the USA, a collection of anecdotes from his hunting days. He is also a syndicated writer for Outdoor Life in the United States and is currently writing a history on the Rhodesian SAS. He is married to Mandy and has two daughters, Hope and Jana, and lives in Darling in the Western Cape of South Africa.

this book was recommended to me and I could not put it down

As an elderly American woman I am not usually into military stories. At the time the SAS was trying to save Rhodesia, I knew nothing about what was going on in Africa. However, this book was recommended to me and I could not put it down. How an accomplished and dedicated group of men could accomplish so much with so little still amazes me. Not only did they have to be watching their backs for military enemies, but often fighting in the African bush they also had to watch their backs, fronts and sides watching for dangerous African wildlife that could kill them. The author did bring up the fact that prior to joining the military Darell Watt had grown up in the bush and was accustomed to wildlife. He is still helping to save wildlife today at Mushingashi Conservancy in Zambia.

The thing that bothered me while reading the book, and still bothers me today, is that the UK and US didn't support the SAS as they should have, and as a result a corrupt dictator Robert Mugabe has been in charge of the country ever since. Had the UK and US been more supportive of the SAS, the entire continent of Africa might have been much better off today without all their corrupt leaders. Those in the SAS who fought so hard for their country are true heroes.

Very interesting reading, brings some little known facts out into the light. Leaves one with a bad taste in the mouth when it comes to politicians in general, and those of perfidious Albion in particular.

A most interesting book for those interested in serious special forces operations. It covers what is now a barely-known 1970s war in which a tiny force of Rhodesian Special Air Service soldiers took on, and trounced, tens of thousands of insurgents trained and armed by the Soviet Union, China and Cuba and supported by virtually the entire Western world. Setting aside any feelings a reader might have about the rights and wrongs of a colonial remnant fighting to retain an unsustainable way of life, this book recounts a military epic. It is also a welcome change from the customary diet of special forces accounts of actions in Vietnam and the Middle East. Well written and structured, it is an excellent read, not to mention being a tour de force of what can be achieved in the face of terrible odds by a tiny number of highly skilled and totally committed soldiers.

Getting the Most from the Story

The parable in this book is about a man named Daniel who, like us, has a problem (how to communicate effectively with others) but doesn’t recognize the source of his problem or how to solve it. Daniel needs to become a Bridge Builder in order to get what he truly wants, but he struggles to accept the solution to his problem because of past failure, preconceptions, and misunderstandings. He exemplifies the individuals I encounter every day in one-to-one coaching and the corporate consulting process.

The characters in this story represent composites of real business professionals I’ve worked with, not anyone in particular. However, early feedback from readers that represent varied industries and cultures tells me that the characters and themes in the story will resonate with most readers in more ways than one.

This story applies to business communication, but it also applies to communication at home, at school, at church, and in any organizational setting. Because the story deals with communication and leadership principles, anyone will benefit from reading it, whether or not they work in the corporate world.

Team-building, leadership training as well as professional growth development.

It is an easy read and almost feels cliche in the beginning. The characters are common and predictably described and I immediately started the book out sceptical. However, it was soon into the reading where I found myself asking important questions with how I conduct myself professionally. I began to find the disconnect between myself and colleagues and realized how much of my personal baggage is what continues to nurture obstacles that keep me from meeting personal and professional goals. The author kept firing simple, yet thought provoking concepts that are worth the time spent for self-evaluation or brainstorming with a group. I would highly recommend that this book be incorporated into team-building activities, leadership training as well as professional growth development.

A Valuable Resource!

Using an intriguing storytelling method, Author Maria Keckler coaches her readers to become SUPERB (acronym for Maria's communication principles) communicators and true Bridge Builders.

In the first section, Maria uses the illustration of Daniel Reed, a new CEO faced with challenges that enable him to develop his communication skills and relationships. Each chapter concludes with guiding questions to learn from Daniel's failures and successes in business. The second section of the book gives clear and straightforward instruction on how to become a true bridge builder, highlighting principles for success.

Author Maria does not just coach people on how to become bridge builders. This book has emerged from Maria's own effective bridge building lifestyle. Having worked with her in the past, I have observed her successful bridge building. She is truly a SUPERB communicator.

I recommend Bridge Builders as an excellent resource for anyone who works with groups-administrators, pastors, secretaries, and even camp counselors. Bridge Builders can also be used in the college or high school classroom. The chapters' questions allow for in-depth discussion. It is also a valuable resource for anyone who desires to improve and strengthen their relationships with others, specifically in the business arena. I highly recommend this book.

Flips the script on the traditional "self help" or "leadership" book...a fantastic approach and a fun read.

This is not your ordinary "self-help" or "personal growth" book. Rather this is a unique book that blends a masterfully told parable with time-honored truths and sage advice. I have to say, I was impressed because of the format as much as the content (well, ok, truth be told, the content trumped the format). Starting off in story-form, the first 2/3rds of the book is a fast and fun read...the type of story that hits home and teaches you without preaching self-help or business tips at you. Then in the final 1/3, the book goes over the principles taught in story form in greater depth.

As for the content, without giving too much away, the idea of being a "bridge builder" is often overlooked in todays "Lone Ranger" world. It is practical, and timely advice. In a culture all too focused on self, this book will help you realize that your best self might be the person that helps others and...wait for it...builds bridges!

There are only a handful of individuals I know that embody this approach...hopefully after reading this book, there will be more. Every organization needs bridge builders, and they are some of the most valuable people. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You WILL BE a better leader after reading it.

About the Author

Andrew Dewdney is Professor of Media Education and Head of the Department of Arts, Media and English at London South Bank University. He is the Chair of the Digital Arts Development Agency (DA2) and the Director of the New Media Gallery at London South Bank University.

Peter Ride is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Westminster and Co-director of the Centre for Arts Research, Technology and Education (CARTE). As a curator and new media producer he has worked with leading international artists and is artistic Director of the Digital Arts Development Agency (DA2).
