Five Keys to Preparing a Strong Application
1. Start early, even if you are not applying early. A well-written app is essential, and good writing takes time. Even gathering all the information needed can take time.
2. YOU are applying. Don’t make the application sound like someone else, or let anyone edit you away from your own voice. But do ask someone to look over your writing for correct English usage and typos.
3. Include all relevant facts about you in the application, once. If you are significantly talented in anything, present evidence; if you have overcome challenges or have special circumstances, explain them. Admissions people can’t consider information they don’t have.
4. Choose recommenders carefully, Colleges that require letters want to know what it is like to teach you, even (maybe especially) when you really had to struggle in the course. Ask teachers who know you well and who can tell them.
5. Work with your school counselor. Many colleges ask for a counselor’s report, so make sure that your counselor knows about your achievements outside of the classroom and your circumstances. Prepare a summary to help the counselor write that report. (We provide a good sample summary form in Admission Matters.)
How to Build a Good List
1. Think carefully about what you want in a school. A key to success is a careful, thorough self-assessment of the things that are important to you - academically, socially, and financially. (We have a great questionnaire to help you do this in Admission Matters).
2. Seek out suggestions. Ask your counselor, parents, and others for ideas. Use a couple of good online college search engines like ones at BigFuture, College Navigator, and SuperMatch to help you find schools that fit your criteria.
3. Do some research. Once you have a list of suggested schools, do your homework. Read about them on BigFuture, check out their websites, and visit them (virtually or in person). Note what each offers and what each lacks; these preferences help you further define what you want in a college.
4. Be flexible. Look carefully at lesser-known colleges and, if you can, schools in different parts of the country. There are no perfect colleges, but there are many where you would be perfectly happy.
5. Have a balanced list. It has been said that it is hard for kids to get into college because they all want to get into colleges that are hard to get into. Make sure your final list includes at least a couple of schools where you are sure to be admitted, as well as others where your chances are more uncertain.

Best Edition Yet!

If you have a question about college, the fourth edition of Admission Matters has all the current information and answers! It’s an outstanding resource for students applying to college and their families and offers clear, concise information about the entire college application process from looking at colleges and making college lists all the way through applying for financial aid and scholarships and making the decision about which college to attend. The list of resources is very complete and even includes new mobile apps. In addition, the authors maintain a new website with updates. As a college consultant, I give a copy of Admission Matters to each of my students because it provides such great information, complements my work, and offers such good advice to their families. Chapter 15 “What Matters Most” contains heartfelt messages to both parents and students to help keep them centered and reassured that the process is doable and will work out.

Its a good book. The TRUE value IMHO is that it explains why the odds of getting into certain schools is so small - but its NOT your fault nor your son and/or daughter. Just too many great applicants, so the decision can be something arbitrary and intangible. Certainly you need certain grades and SAT scores, but even having a great resume may not be enough. There just may not be a fit between the student and the school.
It also helps explain 'legacy' families and other factors come into play like athletics.
Good read that most importantly helps reduce parental stress on the application process.

Nervous parents of college-bound students-- do yourself a favor, and start with this book!

I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource for college-bound students and their parents. It's well written, presented without hype, and provides solid guidance for researching colleges and creating a balanced application list (of safety schools, possibles and reaches).
I'm a college snob. Nearly everyone in my family attended a prestigious college, including me. It's hard not to carry my own background into my current dealings with my child, who, while motivated to attend a selective college, isn't nearly as caught up in "prestige" as I always have been. So here I am, 25 years later, going through the college research/admission process for the first time with my eldest child.
I've bought and read an embarrassing number of college books, and I'm learning how different and much more competitive the college admissions process is today. Much of it is out of our control, which led me to experience some panicky feelings, I'll admit. Have a student with a high GPA, as rigorous a course load as possible for her high school, a long list of varied extracurricular activities and awards, is an all-around awesome kid BUT (insert screeching tires noise here): only has average standardized test scores? What to do? Do we keep this college on the list or delete it? This book helped us navigate through those feelings. I have a great kid (as I'm sure those of you reading this do, too). I need to be hopeful that one of her chosen colleges will see that too.
This was not the first college book I purchased, but I wish it had been. You can read about college acceptance stats, selectivity ratings and SAT/ACT median scores until you're blue in the face; this book explains the college application process in a straightforward, non-threatening manner. I hope I'll also be able to get my child to read it too, but if not, at least I'm armed with realistic information to guide her through the process.
