Great introductory book

It's all here, everything to get started on the kit and more.
-There are the basic of basics: holding the sticks, practice tips, components of the drumset, note values and beginning sight-reading exercises.
-There are the fundamentals: syncopation lessons, stick control, rudiments, rolls, stickings, dynamics and accent studies
-There are drumset studies: bass drum/hi-hat/snare drum variations, plenty of examples in different musical styles and solos.
There are entire books devoted to any one of these aforementioned topics and here they all are in one clear, concise book with CD!!! Beginner or intermediate, you can't go wrong.

Kindle Version: The Free Audio available online only. I should have taken note of the online part of that. You can not download it so you need to be able to go to their website, login and play from there every time you want to practice.

Perfect beginner book

This is a great beginner through intermediate book. Traditionally drummers have begun on the snare drum and then moved to the drum set once the hands were more developed. These days most kids want to start right on the set, the downside being that often the hands just don't get developed as they should. This book solves this conundrum by taking the traditional approach, but combines the snare drum rhythms with the bass drum on quarter notes throughout the beginning section of the book. The student is satisfied because he is on the drum set and is coordinating the foot with the hands and his hands are developing. This is actually better than the traditional approach in that the student must constantly relate the rhythm of the hands against a persistent quarter note. Counting rhythms is emphasized--as it should be. There is also a nice section on the traditional rudiments for the hands before moving into the drum set section. The only short coming is that there should be some discussion or attempt to teach natural sticking, which this book---like many others--ignores. However, this is a subject a good private can address. Other than that I think this is one of the best books for beginners.

There is special emphasis on recent work on memory, contrasting the mechanisms for short-term working memory and long-term memory and summarizing the present understanding of the mechanisms of long-term potential. Great intro neuro book.

This is a great intro neuroscience book.

I bought it to help give me some background when I joined a neuroscience lab as an undergrad. I have never taken a pure neuroscience class so this book helped tremendously in building my foundation for more advanced topics.

This book is not exhaustive by any means and is heading towards the out-of-date side given of the advancements in the field to date. Probably great for an undergrad or beginning grad student.

A self-contained introductory book in neurobiology.

Clearly superior to most of its competitors, this book will serve as a basic introductory text for medical students, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the biomedical sciences.
Shepherd does a wonderful job in explaining core concepts in neuroscience, ranging from the cell, to brain systems, to behavior.
Many of the chapters, especially in molecular and cellular neurobiology, will clarify certain 'dark' concepts, essential not only for neuroscience, but for physiology, pharmacology and immunology as well.
This should be one of the standard texts for every student interested in the nervous system, and in integrative science in general.

Why is there so much confusion when it comes to pinpointing who is a terrorist? The controversy, the author affirms, lies in the definition - or rather, the absence of definition - of terrorism. Indeed, hitherto, the definition of terrorism that has been used, and abused, in international relations has been mainly political, relative, partial, shifting, and selective. The legal dimension has been conspicuously missing. How can terrorism be combated in a fair and efficient manner, asks the author, if it is not first identified? To that end, she lays down the conditions and criteria that are necessary for defining terrorism and thenceforth ending once and for all the double standards in defining and fighting terrorism.

About the Author

Marlene A. Bumgarner is a college instructor and consultant who works with schools and afterschool programs to develop high quality experiences for children and staff. For many years she was a single parent and depended on school age programs to provide her four children safe and nurturing care while she was at work. As the need for afterschool programs grew in her community and the nation she was drawn into the world of lawmaking, fundraising, and advocating for the needs of school age programs.�She developed courses and certificates at her community college and participated in professional development workshops and seminars resulting in more than 50 colleges doing the same. Both personally and professionally, Dr. Bumgarner continues to be committed to improving the quality of out of school time for all children and is a frequent conference speaker.

Mary Hoshiko Haughey has worked with children and youth in YMCA program and administration for 37 years. Mary is currently the Vice President of Operations for Youth Development and Social Responsibility with the YMCA of Silicon Valley. In this role, Mary provides direct leadership and support to over 105 child care, after school, and day camp programs throughout Silicon Valley. Mary is passionate about education and uses innovative YMCA programming to help close the achievement/opportunity gap through after school and summer programs. She builds collaborative relationships with school districts to create out-of-school time education and enrichment programs, manages federal grants in health, nutrition, food security and afterschool, develops staff resources and materials, writes foundation grants, and supervises the youth development department. Mary is active at the state and national level in achievement gap work, afterschool and summer food policy and speaks at national conferences on these topics. Mary has been a child development college instructor for 13 years and is passionate about working with students in the child and youth development fields.
