The inventions of Edwin Land made Polaroid a great company--and later accelerated its decline. Insisting on the Impossible, written by former New York Times reporter Victor K. McElheny, tells the story of one of the early giants in photographic technology.

McElheny follows Land's career from before the founding of Polaroid in 1937 through the release of the landmark SX-70 camera in the early '70s. Land invented instant photography and turned his company into a tremendous success and a Wall Street darling in the '60s and '70s. Land was a bulldog about patents--he trails only Thomas Edison in number of patents he received (535). But while the protection of the U.S. patent system helped Polaroid fend off attacks by its chief nemesis, Kodak, they couldn't shield Land from his own shortcomings. Land tended to lose track of business costs and he sometimes took criticism too personally. And he disdained market research. McElheny writes that Land's business philosophy boiled down to "making things that people didn't know they wanted until they were available." One of Land's final inventions--instant movies--loaded Polaroid with debt and sped his departure from the company he founded. Unlike instant photography, nobody wanted "Polavision." It lacked sound and the film was too short. It was soon overwhelmed by the more popular and practical videocassette tape. Land's instant photography also fell out of favor. It couldn't compete with Kodak Instamatics, improved 35mm cameras, and fully automatic digital cameras.

Land, who died in 1991, was bitter by the time he left Polaroid. He sold all his stock and refused to show up at the company's 50th-anniversary celebration in 1987. His inventions seemed like ancient history. Maybe that's a lesson for today's technology hotshots. --Dan Ring

The life of Edwin Land could easily spring from one of Horatio Alger - s stories. Son of a scrap-metal dealer, Land dropped out of Harvard to pursue the inventing bug and his dream of creating a cheap plastic sheet polarizer. He wanted to decrease auto accidents caused by headlight glare, but it was with sunglasses and photography that the polarizer and the newly founded Polaroid corporation found success. An inveterate innovator and conceptualizer, Land would eventually receive more patents than any other American, excepting Edison. His genius was both for the sudden inspiration and the organizational ability to get people behind him to fill in the details. For example, the idea for instant photography came to him in the space of an afternoon, but it would take many years and many talented individuals to work out all the details. He also developed a new theory of color vision, worked as a science advisor for President Eisenhower, and helped design NASA. He drove Polaroid relentlessly to create new refinements and inventions such as color film and the SX-70 camera. He was motivated by the belief that ``the bottom line - s in heaven. The real business of business is building things.'' His magic touch held right until the end when he developed instant color movie film just as video recorders were coming on the market. The costs to Polaroid were enormous and led to a gradual severing of ties between Land and his company. Former New York Times science reporter McElheny has done a formidable research job, but he can - t seem to decide whether this is a popular account or one for specialists. There are long descriptions of technology and processes that are almost unintelligible to the layperson. The organization throughout is also appalling, with frequent, inexplicable shifts back and forth in time. Fascinating and Accurate

Having been an employee of Polaroid for 15 years in the 60s and 70s I found this biography to be spellbinding and full of great details I never was aware of. Without being overly critical the author provides a balance of Land's brilliance and shortcomings set amidst the business world and its demands and pressures. Land was one of those leaders who was able to withstand many of the pressures of Wall St with his strong beliefs and self confidence. A good example for leaders today. He had his faults, most notably a poor selection of the management that suceeded him, leaving the company leaderless and clueless. But for all that, he was an incredible genius, business leader, inventor, project leader, scientist and inspiration to the thousands of Polaroid employees.

Nice Story, Poorly Written

I rarely write a review before I have completed a text, but am 250 pages into this book and wanted to warn as many others as possible. This book is clearly the weakest of the Sloan Technology Series to date for a number of reasons.
The author frequently delves into ridiculous levels of detail about trivial events, and then glazes over larger technical issues. There is no in depth explanation of the chemical and physical explanations which enabled Land to develop Polaroid into a successful company. There is no rhyme or reason to the flow of the text, and it appears largely to follow the thought stream of the notes that the author used to put the text together. There is almost no quality treatment of the business aspects of Polaroid, the author making passing references when it so suits him.
This is a very thick book, which is quite laborious to read. Unfortunately, the thickness does not translate into quality, or even quantity, of useful information located within.

Pick the Right Dare . . . for Lasting Greatness

This book contains the most detailed information I have seen assembled
in one volume about the life of Dr. Edwin "Din" Land, founder of
Polaroid Corporation. Although I long have read public accounts of
Dr. Land's work, this book greatly added to my knowledge.
For
those who would like to understand the rise and fall of Polaroid and
its stock price over several decades from 1937 through 1980, this book
makes fascinating reading about some of the do's and don't's of
running a high technology company that depends on developing new
technologies and an on-going stream of innovative products.
If you
want to understand the techniques employed by Dr. Land to make
scientific breakthroughs, there are many insights here into his method
of goal-oriented empiricism. Interestingly, it parallels the
approaches used by Thomas Edison, the most prolific inventor of the
20th century. Unfortunately, Dr. Land left little in the way of
writings to draw on other than patent applications and speeches, so
these insights are limited primarily to recollections by colleagues.
On the other hand, the empirical approach is often guided by instinct
based on experience, which is hard to capture. Most scientific
thinkers dislike empiricism, so those who use this method can expect
many rebukes . . . as Dr. Land received in his work on the nature of
color perception.
Those who want to understand the scientific
breakthroughs that Polaroid made will probably come away confused
unless they already have a great knowledge of optics and chemistry
related to photography. I learned a great deal from the book, but
would have liked to learn more. I graded the book down one star for
this weakness.
If you want a fascinating, new look into the
emerging arms race with the Soviet Union in the 1950s, there is much
interesting material here about Dr. Land's role as a national advisor
on defense surveillance.
I was a guest at a dinner hosted by
Dr. Land in the mid 1960s during which he demonstrated his new
technology of instant color photography...His good humor,
generous attitude toward his guests, and his sincere desire to
transform the world, however, left me with a more profound lesson --
seeing much more potential for what a company can be than I would
otherwise have had. Dr. Land explained his vision that night in terms
of releasing the human spirit and encouraging all of us to create and
appreciate more beauty. Although glimpses of this side of Dr. Land
come through in the book, they are overshadowed by the overall theme
of a flawed genius.
I dislike books that argue for flaws in
geniuses. That approach serves to make them more human, but not in a
way that makes us appreciate them or their good points. Geniuses are
by their nature obsessed by their work, and their personal quirks can
be quite negative. ... By the standards of 20th century geniuses,
Dr. Land was a regular guy. In fact, the extent to which he retained
his humanity is part of his greatness.
I think an alternative
explanation to the one in this book of Dr. Land's limitations as a
leader is entirely possible and appropriate. Whenever he was engaged
in endeavors where strong leaders were involved as colleagues or
partners (such as on national defense issues), he was astonishingly
effective. Whenever he was totally given his head, he sometimes
strayed into areas where his vision exceeded the true opportunity.
Clearly, his talent as a technical problem solver vastly exceeded his
talent as an evaluator of product potential.
The story of
Polaroid's rise and fall as depicted here could just as easily be
rewritten as the story of a board of directors and financiers who did
not do their job of providing limits. For example, when Polaroid was
originally taken public in 1937, the investment bankers granted
Dr. Land a 10 year period of total control through a voting trust.
Although every company founder would like such control, that's simply
a bad idea. Management has to be and feel accountable...His authority
seems to me to have been much greater than that normally granted to a
CEO in taking a new product forward....Hopefully, a future book will
look at the fascinating governance challenges and issues related to
being on the board of a company led by a scientific genius who has
provided most of the company's historic value added.
After you
have finished reading and thinking about the fascinating issues in
this book, I suggest that you consider what you would like your legacy
to be. Then, consider what mistakes you will have to avoid in order
to accomplish that legacy. How can others help you overcome your
weaknesses to accomplish more?
Be willing to insist on the
impossible, when it's the right thing to do. You can do it!

Let me start by stating that this book is not only an excellent learning/training resource, but also an invaluable reference to keep with you in your toolbox or toolbag out in the field.

The books starts off with some basic troubleshooting tips and suggestions, followed by an overview of basic electrical theory. There are also chapters dedicated to the use and operation of the various test meters and instruments used in the electrical field.

Typically a chapter will introduce the reader to the basic operating principles and theory behind different industrial electrical devices such as motors, relays, diodes, and PLC's. This overview is then followed by a section or chapter on how to troubleshoot these various devices and common problems that you may encounter. This format helps the reader to understand why a certain problem may be occurring and how to possibly prevent it in the future.

The index and glossary are very useful for finding specific information, and the included CD-ROM is an excellent learning tool and and will surely help anyone trying to "self-teach" with this book.

A must for knowledge workers!

This book should be 'the bible' for everyone involved in knowledge management processes. Holland, as one of the complexity theory founders, decribes the essentials of how complex adaptive rules, in relation to the variability of the environment, determine knowledge dynamics and learning capabilities.
Key message of the book is the way that processes of induction, both cognitive and subcognitive, determine rule making, rule adaptation and environment modeling.
With this work Holland (et al.) was the first to close the gap between cognition, complex adaptive systems and knowledge processing. He also provides a sound computational base for the theories presented, opening possibilities for implementation of 'the induction theory' in real world applications.

About the Author
Born in the Tsang region of Tibet in 1923, Geshe Lhundub Sopa is both a spiritual master and a respected academic. He rose from a humble background to complete his geshe studies at Sera Je Monastic University in Lhasa with highest honors and was privileged to serve as a debate opponent for the Dalai Lama's own geshe examination in 1959. He moved to New Jersey in the United States in 1963 and in 1967 began teaching in the Buddhist Studies Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is now professor emeritus. In 1975, he founded the Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, site of the Dalai Lama's first Kalachakra initiation granted in the West. He is the author of several books in English, including the five-volume comprehensive teaching, Steps on the Path to Englightenment.

Leonard Zwilling studied with Geshe Wangyal from 1967 to 1978 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BA in 1970, going on to receive an MA in Hindu studies (1972) and a PhD in Buddhist studies (1976) also at UW-Madison. His dissertation, on apoha in Buddhist logic, was directed by Geshe Lhundub Sopa. He did predoctoral research in Sri Lanka (1973-74) and Nepal (1974-75) under Ford Foundation and Fulbright-Hays scholarships. From 1977 to 1983 Dr. Zwilling taught Asian religions, Sanskrit, and Tibetan at UW-Madison and elsewhere. He received an MLS from UW-Madison in 1985 and from 1986 to 2009 was the general editor and bibliographer of the Dictionary of American Regional English in the department of English at UW-Madison, where he is presently senior scientist emeritus. Dr. Zwilling has published in a number of fields, and since 2005 his work has centered on Ippolito Desideri and missions in Tibet.

Michael Sweet received a PhD in Buddhist Studies in 1977 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the direction of Geshe Lhundub Sopa. From 1977-78 he taught and did research at the American Institute of Buddhist Studies. After later graduate studies, he was a psychotherapist in public and private practice (1980-2004) and a sometime lecturer at UW Madison, where he has been an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry. He has written extensively on the history of sexuality in South Asia and on Buddhist Studies. Since 2001 his research has focused on Ippolito Desideri and the Catholic missions in Tibet. Current research focuses on the first mission to Tibet, led by the Portuguese Jesuit Antonio de Andrade.

Alchemy in Tibetan Buddhist doctrine

This book is unique in its kind, and I think it is one of the finest books published on the Kadam tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. It contains teachings "to become peacock-bodhisattvas, who can transmute the poisonous afflictions of lust, anger, ignorance, envy, and pride into the elixir of [compassion]."

Or, better, in the words of Atisha: "As copper when touched by mercury turns into pure gold, so the afflictions when touched by pure gnosis become true causes of virtue."

From the introduction: "The two teachings contained in this book, "The Wheel-Weapon" and "The Poison-Destroying Peacock" are early examples of the Tibetan religious genre known as lojong, or mind training. This class of literature developed within the Kadampa school, the earliest of the organized Tibetan Buddhist denominations, and was introduced to Tibet by Atisha Dipamkara, best known for his teachings on "The Seven Points of Mind Training". Atisha's arrival in western Tibet in 1042 is universally regarded as one of the great landmarks in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. (...) By the fifteenth century, the Kadampa evolved into the Gelukpa."

"In fact, lojong is not just a genre of religious literature, but the defining ideology of the Kadampa school itself, just as the Great Perfection (dzogchen) is for the Nyingmapas, the Great Seal (mahamudra) for the Kagyupas, the Paths and Fruits for the Sakyapas, and the Stages of the Path (lamrim) for the Gelukpas."

These teachings are the Kadampa alternative to what amounts to the same in for instance Severance (Ch�): very powerful yogic methods for fighting the view of a real personal identity and the self-cherishing attitude.

The relevance of this knowledge was expressed, for instance, by Shantideva, when he said: "Whoever wants to save himself and others quickly should practice the holy secret of exchanging self and others."

The deity of the two practices in this book is Yamantaka, the wrathful form of Manjushri. Yamantaka means "he who brings an end to Yama," or "Yama's terminator". Yama, the lord of (spiritual) death, symbolizes all evil forces opposed to the Dharma and its practice.

These are advanced mahayana teachings, because it is said:

"The poison that nourishes the peacock
brings ruin to all others." - Tibetan proverb

Behind Closed Doors

Shannon McKenna is a good writer and this is a good romantic suspense story but I personally think she could use a little fewer graphically sexual scenes. They don't really add anything to the story and it gets redundant.

Potential...

There was potential in this book for a decent beach or plane ride read. But the sex scenes just got boring after a while. Raine is trying to find out if her uncle that she hasn't seen in 17 yrs killed her father. She works at his company under one of her assumed names as mommy has been dragging her around europe most her life changing her name. Enter Seth, a PI trying to get revenge for the murder of his younger half brother at the hands of Novak, an associate of Raine's uncle, Lazar. To get to Novak - he wil use Lazar (who he is certain is involved).
Not a bad begining except Raine is living in a house previously occupied by her uncle's exmistress and so it's rigged with cameras and Seth is spending quite a lot of time spying on her getting changed.
Raine is a push over and is perfect for Seth's macho territorial boss role. Novak is not really explored but psychotic about covers it and Lazar is practical (perhaps the most complex role in the entire book).
It's a little obsessive and weird that Seth latches on to Raine immeadiately, but that can be forgiven. Even Raine's stupidity and blind trust in the men around her can be forgiven. What can't be forgiven is the fact that if you take out the sex scenes, the scenes setting up sex, the scenes that just repeat - there is maybe a 100 pages of plot out of 400 some. Some of it doesn't even make sense.
In one scene Raine actually just gets an urge to go jogging at 230 in the morning. Why? She's restless and aggitated. What 26-yr-old does that?! Seth is also sitting outside in his truck watching her house at the time. Just creepy. Another scene has him breaking into her house and waiting for her to get home. It begs the question who this girl should have been scared of...

More of a Romantica than a romance

The book was very uneven in a lot of respects, and as I can tell from the reviews, a lot of readers did not think they were getting Romantica. Romantica is romantic erotica, and it is one couple with lots of heated erotic situations.
I totally agree that the characters are inconsistent. I also think the villains were too. The whole romantic suspense genre seems to be predicated on the most unlikely people with nothing in common falling into bed together. Or in this case the wall, shower and so on.
It also includes several detailed scenes of the villain having sex which were very offputting, as was his voyeurism with the various camersa dotted around his house, and the explicit nature of said activities in various multiples and gender combinations.
Kensington should make it clear that the Brava line is going to contain material like this. A reader who forked out good money expect Nora Roberts would well be peeved, not to mention goggled-eyed or even offended.
Having said that, the one thing the book does having going for it is an interesting if totally Neanderthal hero, though I can' tbelieve he had not had a girl for five years since his brother was killed, he is so rampant. The drought becomes a flood, and Raine is swept away, but I would have liked to see her exercise a bit ore common sense and spine. The games they play are not always healthy or safe, and Seth not trusting her toward the end is pretty unforgiveable even if their sex life is stupendous.
The book is way too long, with lashings of detail on every movement of his body (where are HER feelings in all of this) and even the hero says himself they are like a pair of minks. Subtlty, nuance, romance, even foreplay, vanish in a haze of power pwoer games on Seth's part. This novel could have been cut to half its length and toned down and not suffered, and still got commitment and the happily ever after.
Readers who like Susan Johnson, Robin Schone and Thea Devine will enjoy these books, but anyone else should exercise caution.

excellent neuro review

This is an excellent neurology review book. It is very clinically oriented. The illustrations and tables are brilliantly organized to aid understanding and info retention. Also a nice quick reference book to have on the office shelf.

Anthology of funny lines

This book is in fact quite entertaining and certainly good for a few laughs. It's essentially a compilation of lots and lots of funny one-liners organised into sections of life, death, marriage, working, men & women, food, etc. etc. Some of the best quotes are from Groucho Marx, Woody Allen, Steven Wright, Joan Rivers, Rodney Dangerfield, Jerry Seinfeld, and a few others, while some are only mildly amusing or just clever - which is also quite entertaining. There's a HUGE amount of material here and it's a good reference if you're for example writing a speech. I admit I completely cracked up over a few of them - priceless stuff.

A great collection

This book is a very funny collection of all topics from bagpipes to marriage. It's got quotes from all sources from Mark Twain to Homer Simpsons. It's an excellent read for someone looking for a few laughs to put into a speech, or even just for leisure.

Worthy of 5 STARS

This book is BIG at 550 pages.

I really enjoyed it, mostly because it made me laugh, but also because of the quality of the people that they chose.

There must be 300+ contributors, with some of their most memorable quotes from Oscar Wilde right up to modern day folk like Bill Hicks and even Ellen.

I found myself reading this book most mornings over a cup of tea, with a pen in hand marking the ones that cracked me up, for future reference.

I also found myself readings some of the really funny ones to friends, while on the phone.

One fringe benefit for me was tuning in to some names of people who i LOVED their quotes but had never heard of their work...it made me look into
their work and find more interesting books, music and output.

Very well put together, in sections/topics, nice BIG FONT = easy to read.

Highly recommended if you want to laugh, think a bit...and don't have time to read a whole book in one sitting.

About the Author
Scott DeVeaux is a nationally recognized jazz scholar whose 1997 book The Birth of Bebop: A Social and Musical History won the American Book Award, an ASCAP–Deems Taylor Award, the Otto Kinkeldey Award from the American Musicological Society, and the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Sound Research. He has taught jazz history at the University of Virginia for more than 25 years.

Gary Giddins is the Executive Director of the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the City University of New York. He was the Village Voice jazz columnist for over 30 years and remains a preeminent jazz critic who received the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award, and the Bell Atlantic Award for Visions of Jazz: The First Century in 1998. His other books include Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams: The Early Years, 1903–1940, which won the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award and the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Sound Research; Weatherbird: Jazz at the Dawn of Its Second Century; Faces in the Crowd; Natural Selection; Warning Shadows; and biographies of Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker. He has won an unparalleled six ASCAP–Deems Taylor Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Peabody Award in Broadcasting.
