Reiland Rabaka is associate professor of Africana Studies in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he is also an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Women and Gender Studies and a Research Fellow at the Center for Studies of Ethnicity and Race in America (CSERA). He is the author of W.E.B. Du Bois and the Problems of the Twenty-First Century (2007), Du Bois's Dialectics: Black Radical Politics and the Reconstruction of Critical Social Theory (2008), and Africana Critical Theory: Reconstructing the Black Radical Tradition, from W.E.B. Du Bois and C.L.R. James to Frantz Fanon and Amilcar Cabral (2009), all published by Lexington Books. He is also the recipient of the Cheikh Anta Diop Distinguished Career Award.

The late 1980s have seen an explosion of interest in an unconventional, and sometimes bizarre, set of practices and beliefs commonly called the New Age movement. Led by such visible figures as Shirley MacLaine, thousands of Americans have turned to a wide range of self-help methods and philosophies geared toward spiritual fulfillment and, particularly, healing of the body, including acupuncture, channeling, and crystals. What all these methods seem to have in common is an attempt to eschew conventional medical treatments, to move beyond the mysteries of the body to those of the psyche and soul. But as Robert C. Fuller demonstrates in this fascinating and surprising new book, such "alternative" forms of healing are nothing new in American culture.
Going back to the early nineteenth century, Fuller asserts, Americans have relied on a bewildering assortment of unorthodox medical systems that represent a characteristically American strain of religious thought--a belief that spiritual, physical, and even economic well-being flow from an individual's rapport with the cosmos. Drawing on a wealth of historical, psychological, and sociological information, Fuller's story begins with such early health reforms as homeopathy, hydropathy, and Thomsonianism (which held that all disease was caused by cold and could be cured by heat). Though fairly conventional in outlook, they signalled the appearance of metaphysical elements that were destined to erupt in later movements. Fuller then looks at mesmerism and Swedenborgianism, which sprang up in the 1830s and 40s. Both of these movements were extremely popular in America, promising a triumph of piety and spirituality over the weaknesses of the body and mind, and changing the way thousands of Americans looked at modern medicine. Fuller traces this increasing metaphysical dimension, first in the early practices of osteopathic and chiropractic medicine, and then throughout the twentieth century in such varied and colorful systems as crystal healing, rolfing, spirit channeling, holistic health, and even Alcoholics Anonymous.
Fuller argues that these healing movements have played an important role in American religious life, offering people a more vivid experience of a "sacred reality" than do most organized religions. His fascinating and sympathetic look at this thriving, and peculiarly American, mode of religion will interest a wide range of readers interested in American religious, cultural, and medical history.

WHAT CAME BEFORE "NEW AGE HEALING"? THIS BOOK EXPLAINS...

Robert Fuller is a professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Bradley University. This book is a fascinating and informative history (published in 1989, at the crest of the "New Age" movement in popular culture), beginning in the early 19th century, of alternative health movements.

Beginning with movements such as Mesmerism and Swedenborgianism, and proceeding to figures such as Samuel Thomson (the "father of American herbalism," who "surmised that there was only one cause of disease, cold, and one cure, heat"), and then covering the early practices of Hydropathy (originated in Austria by Vincent Priessnitz), which was first strongly advocated in this country by Joel Shew. Fuller also covers briefly the influence of Ellen G. White (the "prophetess" of the Seventh-Day Adventist movement) in the field.

Extensive treatment is given to Daniel David Palmer (founder of Chiropractic), with Fuller observing that "Today's chiropractor is well aware that there is no single cause of disease." He also covers Andrew Taylor Still and Osteopathy, noting that "There is... strong evidence suggesting that Palmer borrowed freely from Still's teachings in the development of his own system."

The book finishes with a section on "New Age and Crystal Healing."

This book is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in Alternative Healing, New Age Healing, and particularly the history of such practices.

Fantastic, easy to read book

I am always extremely leary of biochemistry and/or bioconjugate books because if you're looking for a specific answer, you're not going to find it in a book. Instead, you have to bother those with experience and learn from their techniques. HOWEVER, this book is an exception in the highest regard! I was able to easily derive a surface chemistry protocol in around 10 minutes, and it only took me that long because I was fascinated on how direct this book was. Basically here's what you get:

1) Easy to read/decipher information

2) Fantastic Index

3) Quick answers that I couldn't even find on Google

Best of all, in my opinion, is that each section is not prefaced with the past history of who/what/where/when/why, which although sometimes interesting, gives you no assistance in the lab.

It is hard for a chemistry major student to switch to biochemistry area. When a chem student try to read the big biochemistry textbook, he will be dizzy because of so many reaction equations and biocircles. Interesting read

The history of the development and application of Glare is fascinating and instructive to anyone interested in materials. With the constant struggle to develop stronger lighter more fatigue resistant materials, at reasonable cost both in terms of initial manufacture and subsequent repair, Glare offers great potential. Carbon fiber composites may offer better theoretical benefits, but the difficulty of their fabrication, their highly anisotropic nature, difficulty of repair and fault intolerance make them tough to deploy economically. Glare offers a highly fault-tolerant alternative with better economics and deserves wider consideration by the engineering community.

I was particularly interested to learn of Fokker's early production experience with laminated aluminum, it's economics and fatigue resistance. With the current trend for CNC machining, given the ease by which a CAD file can be sent to a fab house, it's easy to overlook the fundamentals of fatigue and the ease by which it can be mitigated with a lower cost alternate methodology such as lamination. Glare builds on Fokker's experience and this book illustrates how.

The only peer-reviewed diet known to reverse coronary disease

My husband and I used to eat relatively healthy. Bio-markets, occasionally vegan soups, we even bought an omega juicer. His cholesterol was hovering around 200 and below, LDL at about 100, and blood pressure was slightly high (135/85 or around that number.) We are in our 40s, athletic, no family history of heart disease, non-smokers. It was a shock to us when he started having chest pains, and was told he had 80% LAD blockage. The doctor was clearly not very tactful in the cath lab when he told me that it was called "the widowmaker." So he got a stent, started taking statins and anti-platelet, and we switched to Dr. Ornish (or Caldwell, or Esselstyn, or Pritkin... there are several proponents of similar plans with slight variations) diet. I got all the books and the recipes, and started the diet with him, since I cannot scarf down burgers while he eats carrots.

Two months later, I can see the following results:
His weight went from 175 to 155 lbs. Mine from 136 to 120. Before the diet I was trying to lose 5 lbs, to get to my happy weight of 130. The scale did not budge. Now, if I don't eat I keep losing weight, so I have to eat a lot, and often. His cholesterol went from 197 to 90, with an LDL of 20. That's not even human, in my opinion. Now he does take Lipitor (40 mg), so I am his "control group," since I take no medication. Mine went from 187 to 150, and LDL from 102 to 70. We asked the cardiologist whether he recommends this diet. He said yes, sure, if you can do it. He'd rather have people take their statins though, since the diet is so restrictive that few people stick with it long term. My husband's blood pressure went from 135/85 to 116/70, or something around there. We have a blood pressure machine now, so I can tell. (Can you tell I am doing this very scientifically.) I read all the articles I could find on pubmed.com and decided to supplement with B12 and Fish Oil of some high quality. The cardiologist said the fish oil makes no difference, but for now we take it. We also take Cardioviva, a probiotic which might have some benefits. It can't hurt anyway. We started eating fish a few weeks back, grilled or steamed, about twice a week, so we might stop the fish oil. That is the only concession we make to the diet.

Is it hard? Yes, it is, especially since I am doing it just to support him. Can it be done? Absolutely. It only depends how scared you are, and how strong is your motivation. We exercised before, so we keep that up. I'd say the first three weeks were the worst, your body just can't figure where did all the dietary fat go. Then you adjust, and things that you took for granted start to taste amazing, especially the forbidden ones. I can tell immediately if something has peanuts, because I can TASTE THEM! But I cannot eat them, not part of the diet. There is a direct correlation between your LDL and the number of coronary and cardiac incidents. Below 50 LDL, none. So that's where we try to keep it, and I worry of course about the stent, and the anti-platelet medication, and about an asteroid hitting the Earth someday. That's just me. But the diet works, I feel healthier than ever, I can wear skirts I had stashed away 20 years ago (I found one in a box) and all my... mmm... systems work really well. We miss cheese, lobster rolls, fried clams, oysters... but you get used to it, and when you look at the benefits I think it is worth it. If we make it to 75, maybe we will stop and start eating whatever.

BETTER THAN A BYPASS OR STENT

I am a 70-year-old physician who was hospitalized for his first and only heart attack at age fifty-three. My Dad had his first heart attack at age forty-two and died at age forty-nine after his second heart attack. My brother had a massive heart attack in his fifties. Except when placed at the time of a heart attack, I am skeptical that the placement of stents in heart blood vessels are more valuable than a placebo. I read this book because I happened to see Dr. Ornish, the author, interviewed on Nova when I was at home convalescing from my heart attack. I was very doubtful about the validity of what I was hearing from the author (none of my physicians had mentioned Ornish's approach); however, I thought that I would be dead in a few years and had nothing to lose by trying Ornish's program. Two months after going on the diet described in the book, I was astounded when the hospital laboratory reported that my cholesterol had dropped by one third. I suspected that the hospital laboratory had made an error; a similar result a week later amazed me. I had been a little overweight. On the Ornish diet, I ate all that I wanted; and my weight dropped by more than ten percent. I discovered later that deviations from the Ornish diet caused rapid increases in the cholesterol in my blood. I have adhered rigorously to his diet and have had no heart problems, strokes, or other diseases related to arteriosclerosis. It is very profitable for cardiologists to insert stents. For most patients, it would be much more valuable to follow the diet and other changes in life style that are described in this book. The text is short and fun to read. Since my heart attack seventeen years ago, I have given over fifty copies of this important book to friends with cardiovascular diseases.

This book is a very silly joke.

This book is a joke. The ideas expressed are silly. Many sentences are nonsense. There is no concept of "How to Build a Quadcopter". This book is simply a hash of silly sentences. I wonder if it is badly translated from an other language or simply stuck together to extract money from an unwary purchaser. I can not recommend this book to any-one unless you like to read for a laugh (but to get a laugh you will need to have experience at building quadcopters).

You can't assemble a book by joining random words from a dictionary and expect it to make sense. This is the worst "book" I have ever attempted to read.

terrible book. a complete scam, there are no pictures, the person seems to have difficulty with English, and in the disclaimer, there is a part written about this book guaranteed not to make you horny. That's right...horny! do not get this book.

a good read

Heroine is middle aged, recently divorced and has no experience with men. She married her husband when she was eighteen because she was pregnant with twins. The hero is ten years younger than heroine. Ally and Raul are a great couple. She thinks that she is too old for the hero, Raul and pretty much tries to discourage him from pursuing her. There are a lot of supporting characters in the book. Ally's best friend, Suzanne, is a piece of work and was not a good friend to Ally. I loved that the book had an epilogue and I would recommend this book highly.
